Volume control output device flickering or changes

Post by Thorium »

Hi,

I came accross this issue in my new Mint/Mate box:
When I open the "Volume Control", "Output Devices" window and I set the drop-list to "Headphones", the drop-list is flickering every 1 to 5 seconds. I have drops in the headphone.
If I set to "Analog Output", the next flick, the drop-list will change to "Headphones".
At first I was thinking this is a compatibility issue between kernel and Nvidia driver. Now I am not sure.

I tried the 5 differents drivers from "Driver Manager":
nvidia319 (recommanded)
nvidia319-updates
nvidia-304
nvidia304-updates
My kernel is 3.11.0-12-generic
In Internet there are a lot of sound issue due to this incompatibility.

But this is the same issue that this thread as well
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... ring+sound
It's why I am not sure; when I remove my headphone the drop-list is steady.
I have 2 headphones sets, the both have the same problem One is around 30 ohms the other is 880 ohms.
When I plug in, the drop-list change automatically from "Analog Output" to "Headphones" and when I remove, it changes back to "Analog Output".
But I tried with a jack to jack cable, so no headphone but only a jack. Issue is the same!!!!
Detection is not done by impedance but by the presence of the jack.
I tried to find a setup in the UEFI to stop the detection but there is nothing. Maybe there is one in the driver? Where?

I need to use my headphone to monitor audio. I don't want to buy another one.
Previousely on this box I was running Ubuntu 10 then Stella6.3 (mix of Centos6.3) without this problem but I couldn't upgrade the kernel due to incompatibility with Nvidia driver (I don't know versions)

Did you get this issue? What did you do?
I have 2 ideas and need your advices and how-to:
1 - Try the new NVidia driver :
http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/72250
Version 331.38
Release Date Mon Jan 13, 2014
Operating System Linux 64-bit
But I want to be sure I can come back if something goes wrong. The best should be to have the driver inside the "Driver Manager" window.
How to install it inside?
Did you try it?
2 - Change the kernel to which version? How to do that? Dis you try that?

Any help, idea is welcome.
Many thanks in advance.

Find your audio devices

Code: Select all

aplay -l
inxi -A
sudo apt-get install alsa-utils
alsamixer
PS. Try to kill pulseaudio first

Code: Select all

killall pulseaudio

I did you code but still the same, flickering every few seconds.
I installed kernel 2.6.39 it is stable with it.

I'll try to install kernel between the both and see which one fail.

I tried the following kernels:
Not good is when I have the flickering audio
  • 3.11.0-12 => NOT good
    3.10.0-031000 => NOT good
    3.9.0-030900 => NOT good
    3.5.0-030500 => NOT good
    3.3.0-030300 => NOT good
    3.2.54-030254 => Good
    3.2.0-030200 => Good
    2.6.39-02063904 => Good
So, the issue appears from 3.3.0
However I have anothe issue: Sound has statics like old dusty vinyl increasing and decreasing with sound intensity :cry:
This is more difficult to find a fix for that, I think.
Any idea?

BTW, do I need to install other files after installing 2 headers and 1 image?
I installed a virtual as well and I can see it in the grub list. What is this kernel?
Could you have a look here?

I installed UbuntuStudio in a test HDD and same box. (Hard to find appli with XFCE)

Edit: After further tests there are flickers as well

Kernel is 3.11.0-11 lowlatency
Video driver is xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:1.0.9-2
I installed the 2 above in my Mint-Mate box but I still have the flickering sound/setup.

I'll ask to UbuntuStudio to find a fix, this fix should work for Mint.

Today 07 June 2014, I installed Fedora 20 Mate and tested audio.

Audio is perfect no glitch, volume slider jump, no bug !!!!!

So, this is a bug with Ubuntu based OS and people here don't care.

So I say good bye to Mint.

Readers, if you get the same, you know the solution.
