No sound through displayport on R9 290x

I have a AMD R9 290x using the propietory driver 14.6 beta. I use the displayport cable, plugged directly into the gpu, which achieves video but fails to play sounds.

It seems to show that only intel sound exists. It does not seem to reconize the radeon sound.
I don't honestly know how to fix it. I'm using Linux Mint 17 64bit.

Rightclick the volume control to open Sound Preferences. Check what shows in the Hardware panel, and check what is toggled in the Output panel.

(That's in Mate, anyway. Cinnamon should be similar. No idea about XFCE these days.)

I upgraded the linux kernal,

, edited the /etc/default/grub and changed the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" by adding "radeon.audio=1" to the end. I installed the xorg drivers for the gpu. After I rebooted, sound still didn't come back. Then I saw an option in the sound menu that wasn't there before. However, it only sounds clean through headphones. Through the monitor (where the speakers are), its really garbled up. Help?

Thanks, ofb! It was the answer for me.

Though for the life of me, cannot understand why that doesn't work when the Sound Preferences are opened from the Start Menu, rather than the Sound Icon. Displayport shouldn't be so tricky to configure, it was working fine on Linux Mint 13 MATE x64. Had to fiddle around with Mint 17 also, added PulseAudio, which fixed the issue on that release, but didn't on 17.1.

Hopefully this will keep the Topic alive, took me a couple of hours to find. Again, thanks for the fix, reinstall is my last option to revert to.
