[Solved]k3b vs Brasero to make music CD?

Post by ES44AC8102 »

Using Synaptic and looking at the screen shot of k3b CD Kreator it looks like it has more features than Brasero. If I choose to add it to Mint 17.1 must I get all the libraries that have "k3b" in the title? Or am I good to go getting just the k3b that is titled "Sophisticated CD/DVD burning program?"

Thanks in advance!

Don't use Brasero. It doesn't work very well.

If you try to install K3b in a desktop environment other than KDE, you'll discover that many other K3b/KDE/Qt packages need to be installed too. This happens automatically. If you don't install these extra packages, K3B won't work properly.

I use K3b, and like it a lot better than any of the other CD/DVD burners. When you install it, it will automatically pull in any libs it needs.

Don't use Brasero.

k3b is best but requires a bunch of KDE stuff if you don't already use KDE.

xfburn is OK, much better than brasero if you don't want the extra stuff for k3b.

Yes, it'll pull in a ton of KDE dependencies.

This is obviously a problem if you have very limited HD space.

But for something like that I don't think it'd be a problem. If you want to install Dolphin, which is the excellent KDE file manager, it'd be more of an issue because you use the file manager so much. It will use more RAM. But I've used Dolphin in several other DEs. It's so powerful it speeded me up more than it slowed the machine down.

You don't have to worry about conflicts too much. Most DEs are GTK based. KDE is Qt based. That's why it has to pull in so many libraries.

OK so I installed k3b and all the stuff that went with it. I went to HELP and it said "cannot find help center". So back to synaptic and got the help center and intstalled it. But now when in k3b I hit HELP k3b Handbook, and i get a window that says "Documentation not found." That doesn't instill a lot of confidence, lol, why suggest I install it, only to say it can't find it?

Thanks to all!

Definately K3b.

In the software manager do a search for k3b. Install the main program and the extra codecs package and software manager will get all the dependencies.

K3b really doesnt need documentation. Its pretty understandable. Use the icons in the middle lower window to select what you want to do. If you want to burn and iso then that is under 'tools' in the top main menu.

Honestly I am not trying to make this harder than it needs to be!

Look at the screenshots and note the differences between Synaptic and Software Manager. Which one do I believe? Or should I just blindly install everything that is indicated as NOT INSTALLED from both programs?

Software Manager.

Looks like you already have installed it - The green check marks show it installed.

Go to menu/Sound and Video/k3b

If your are having problems starting it then post your problem.

K3b will never be perfectly integrated into a GTK+ environment, and it's 'help' won't work. If this is a concern, you should use XfBurn instead, which is also able to make audio CDs.
