.mov files and VLC codecs

I've had this issue for a long time now, but it's about time I tried to find a working solution to this problem I've been having with .mov files created by Apple, also known as Apple QuickTime format that are usually in .MOV or .M4A formats These are DRM ridden audio and video formats which doesn't playback properly in VLC.

The problem:
-- 1. VLC can play back the video just fine for some .mov file formats, but there is no audio.
-- 2. VLC can play back the video, but there will be no video or audio. (content bought off iTunes Store)

I look around on various sites, but there is no answer to my solution. They all state so-and-so;
Have you installed restricted extras?

YES. I do have them installed along with a bunch of other audio codecs and extras and non-free stuff available. But these do not make any difference at all. Same problems as described above. Trying to play back with other media players is the same result too as outlined in problems 1 and 2 above.

mplayer -vc help | grep -i 'smc'
ffsmc       ffmpeg    working   Apple Graphics (SMC) codec  [smc]
states working, but not 100%, changing audio settings in VLC yields same results no matter what I select. By default I have Video and Audio to Automatic so it chooses the best one available to play back stuff that it needs.


Something to take note of in Problem one in one of my .mov files, there will be no audio, but when it reached to the end of the video clip, I get a quick blip of distorted white noise, and sometimes in other .mov files I'll get this clicking white noise all the way through it while its playing the video.

it does state in the Warnings that DRM protected content is not supported, it is M4V format video too which was purchased through iTunes Store, however when I playback these same video files on a Mac in VLC, it works, just not for Linux, despite having all the extras and other codecs installed which allows playback of protected content.

I think there may be something I'm missing, but just don't know what, perhaps there's something I can tweak to make it play properly so I don't get this no audio issue in the video playback in VLC with .MOV files It's just a bit annoying it can work in one version of VLC on a different platform, but not another. Perhaps it's because Linux can't get the official QuickTime codecs and so it has to settle for something else to take it's place. Who knew that Apple's own video file formats would cause so much trouble later on down the road. x_x

The only thing that comes to mind is you might be able to convert the videos to a different format, and lose the DRM in the process. I use FF Multi Converter for translating media files to different formats. I don't know if this will help, but it's worth a try.

In my experience, whether in Windows or Linux, If one media player can't play something, another one always can. This is why I always have both VLC and MPV installed. I use MPV mostly, but if it doesn't like a file, VLC will always play it. And it applies the other way round too.

it's bit annoying like that. VLC is suppose to be able to handle many video and audio formats, but the codecs for Linux are lacking since Apple doesn't release it's software codecs for Linux platforms, but they will for Windows. It might be possible to take iTunes or at least QuickTime package file and recompile them for Linux, although may be considered reverse engineering in Apple's eyes. The codecs available to Linux just don't cut it for reading DRM formats and non-DRM formats, even if VLC says it can play them, it can't really.

I am able to play MOV files with my VLC on Linux Mint 17.1
You might want to reinstall the extras again to make sure
you have them then go into VLC/Tools/preferences advanced settings
and check there.

Open your terminal and enter

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

to reinstall them.

You can download good sample MOV files here to test in case your own MOV files are bad or corrupt

Apple doesn't release it's software codecs for Linux platforms, but they will for Windows.
I didn't know that. How kind of them. They don't mind helping out their arch enemy, but it seems they hate free software users even more.

All Apple codecs work with VLC.
Apple has not ported their Quicktime media PLAYER to linux, that is all.
If you cannot play a file with VLC then you need to examine your settings, etc.

In my experience, whether in Windows, If one media player can't play something, another always do that. This is why I always have installed 4 media players.
any one of them catch always.
