No sound after installing Steam

Post by Steensen » Wed Jul 15, 2015 3:46 am

Hi there.
I have spent some time trying to figure out this problem my self, but so far no luck.

I have audio both in headset and speakers when clean install (17.1), and updates installed (17.2), but after installing Steam (after upgrading to 17.2), sound is lost from my speakers, but not my headset.
I remember that my desktop looked very nice before installing steam, but after reboot after stem install, desktop went back to "boring" look, and the audio had gone from my integrated speakers (Harman/Kardon).

Removed steam again, same problem.

Tried to upgrade from 3.13.0-37 generic 64bit kernel (not totally sure about number) to current kernel (3.16.0-38 generic 64bit), as some people have mentioned that as an possible solution, but not in my case.

I have checked a lot of forum threads, amongst others this good one and tested some of the tings in the ubuntu forum thread he links to.

Alsa mixer have been un-installed and re-installed, same problem, nothing muted, all at 100, no sound in speakers.
Before upgrading kernel, i tried installing pavucontrol, but no difference, and nothing muted, sound bar bounces when playing audio in banshee and video in VLC.

Desktop Mannager (Mate, Cinamon, KDE etc) I'm in doubt if I even have one installed, think I have MATE, how can I check for that?

Now I have hit a cold spot, looking for help for my system specific:

Now I have re-installed the machine, without STEAM installed, and so far it runs.
If anybody have a solution to the STEAM trouble on Linux Mint MATE (Rafaela 17.2), then please post it here.

So it looks like you are dual booting Win 8.1 / Linux? Once you install Steam, try powering down you PC, wait a few seconds. Then boot into Linux and see if there is sound.

Thx. for you reply.

Yes, I'm dual booting Win. 8.1 & Mint 17.2 MATE on a 250GB SSD.

I have rebooted after every installation/upgrade, but "reboot", not shut-down, wait, start again.

Will try again when I get access to a better internet connection (currently a 256kbit, have a 40/40Mbit another place).

I have now installed Steam and Settlers V at my 40/40 connection, and after that, I had to un-mute my sound, but then all sound where working correct.
So basicly my problem where a too slow connection.
thx. for your help.
