Most all of those packages in your first post deal with direct rendering, and I was hoping to see a coresponding hdmi port or something related . . ?
Do you have or use hdmi? Better take a look at your whole system:

Ahah ! Yes an hdmi port being used. And since your system is all Intel based I would put money on the libdrm-intel modules.
You could check the Configuration tab by clicking the Sound icon in the panel > Sound Settings, to see if there is an hdmi port shown.

Re: Which of the...updates would cause no sound in LM xfce 18?
I got it to work. I do have a theory of what could of caused the sound not to work but I could be wrong. I think apt-xapian-index update needs to be installed by itself & then do a reboot. I think apt-xapian-index caused Linux Mint to loses the repositories & PPAs information until after reboot which could cause some installation issues.
Re: Which of the...updates would cause no sound in LM xfce 18?
It stopped working again. I went back to 17.3 but didn't install libdrm and the sound works. It does make me wonder if I install Ubuntu 16.04.1 if I will run into the same problem.
