[Solved] What is the fastest way to convert mp4 to avi?
Hello, I found that converting mp4 files to avi on vlc player takes quite a long time. My tv media player suppoorts only .avi files hence I need to convert the mp4 files to avi.
1. Is there any faster way to convert mp4 to avi files.
2.what is the minimum specifications of the output file to watch on a 29 inch tv screen so that conversion will take lesser time?
Thanks in advance.

Re: What is the fastest way to convert mp4 to avi?
It's hard to say without knowing what the default settings are for vlc transcoding, and I can't seem to find anything that says that they are. However, when they don't specify any encoding options they're usually using a fast preset anyway.
Also hard to say without knowing what sort of hardware you're using ... if it's an old single core box you're going to spend as much or more time converting video as watching it. Generate a system report with inxi -Fxz in the terminal and post the output.
There aren't any magic encoders that work all that much faster than others. Some may seem faster but they just use the fastest (and lowest quality) presets.
It's not necessarily enough to know that you need an avi file. There may be a maximum level supported by your TV, which you should be able to find out from its docs.
What I use to convert to avi is avidemux. It's pretty powerful and relatively easy to use. Use quantizer mode instead of one or two pass target bit rate or file size (which is actually the same thing really). It's about as fast as one pass but gives you as good quality as two pass bit rate mode. One pass bit rate will be faster but you will get terrible quality. Also, all those lovely encoder settings will increase encode time but will also increase the video quality quite a bit. No free lunch here.
Avidemux is in the repos for mint 17.whatever but I'm not sure with mint 18,

avidemux is in the 18 repos.Avidemux is in the repos for mint 17.whatever but I'm not sure with mint 18,
I used vlc to convert a couple of odd formats and it seems to play the file as it converts - so it's slow.
Avidemux works well if you don't edit (cut/paste) anything in the file (then the audio is often out of sync); you might also look into ffmpeg/avconv command line converts and a GUI for them, winff. Setting up ffmpeg/avconv the first time will probably be a PITA, but then you'll have something you can run easily.
We used to have a DVD player with an SD card slot that was picky about which files it'd play, and I used this to convert everything to an AVI format it liked:
~/bin/ffmpeg_avicon :
Code: Select all
# Convert to AVI and leave the resolution the same.
#
/usr/bin/ffmpeg -i $1 \
-f avi -vcodec mpeg4 -vtag XVID \
-b 800k -qmin 2 -qmax 4 \
-acodec libmp3lame -ab 64k -ac 2 \
-threads 2 \
$1.avi
Then
Code: Select all
ffmpeg_avicon input-file.mp4
Edit: it'll accept a lot of video formats for input, not just mp4.
These lines control the output quality:
-b 800k -qmin 2 -qmax 4 \
-acodec libmp3lame -ab 64k -ac 2
Edit2:
That depends on how much quality you want, how close you're sitting, etc. As a first shot you might as well leave the resolution alone, so output resolution = input resolution.2.what is the minimum specifications of the output file to watch on a 29 inch tv screen so that conversion will take lesser time?

Re: What is the fastest way to convert mp4 to avi?
Well, your system doesn't look that slow, and if VLC plays as it converts ... I've always used dedicated encoders ... it's going to be slow.
I still think avidemux is the best choice for beginners, though it's true that the repo version doesn't edit h.264 video very well. It converts them just fine though ... you'll get a nasty looking message popup when it opens an h.264 video file, but just click "use safe mode" and all is well. I've done it many times.
IMHO WinFF is absolutely rubbish. In both Windows and Linux it's one of the poorest working video encoders I've ever used, and I've used some really fcrap ones.
I also wouldn't recommend CLI tools for newbies ... there are plenty of decent GUI tools out there. I started using MSDOS and Unix over 30 years ago and of course that was all CLI, and while I use the terminal all the time if it's faster, I never do if there's a decent GUI. To all those erstwhile wannabe Linux geeks out there: no one gives a flying frak about your CLI chops.

Thank you . I will give avidemux a try after installing it. Is it a simple install with apt-get install?Hoser Rob wrote:Well, your system doesn't look that slow, and if VLC plays as it converts ... I've always used dedicated encoders ... it's going to be slow.

Open SYnaptic Package Manager, click the search button, enter 'avidemux', and search. If it's there install it (I don't use 18 yet). If not search "ubuntu 16.04 avidemux' and find what's there on ubuntuforums or askubuntu.

Re: What is the fastest way to convert mp4 to avi?
You should first try to simply change the container to avi without reencoding video and audio streams, that's the easiest and fastest way. Then it depends on whether media player able to decode video and audio codecs within avi container.
Install ffmpeg:
Example:
Edit:typo
Install ffmpeg:
Code: Select all
apt install ffmpeg --install-recommends
Code: Select all
ffmpeg -i myvideo.mp4 -codec: copy myvideo.avi

Good point. You should first try to simply change the container to avi without reencoding video and audio streams, that's the easiest and fastest way.
Pretty sure you can also do that with avidemux (choose avi output container and 'copy' for the encoding), but I can't get it to run...
Code: Select all
avidemux: error while loading shared libraries: libADM6avcodec.so.56: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Sounds reasonable.

The amount you personally use a terminal is just about perfect, but if someone else uses it more they're a geek and showing off.and while I use the terminal all the time if it's faster, I never do if there's a decent GUI. Re: What is the fastest way to convert mp4 to avi?
This seems to work, but did not create any .avi file. I need to copy the converted avi file on to the TV DVD player so that it can play there.Laurent85 wrote:You should first try to simply change the container to avi without reencoding video and audio streams, that's the easiest and fastest way. Re: What is the fastest way to convert mp4 to avi?
There is a PPA for avdemux , but I hope it is safe to use it. https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2328961

Hmm you did not run the command from directory where your mp4 files are located.deepakdeshp wrote:Code: Select all

Re: What is the fastest way to convert mp4 to avi?
I had given the pwd as the output of the .avi file, where it is not found, the .avi isnt available even in my source .mp4 file too, I had checked it.Laurent85 wrote:Hmm you did not run the command from directory where your mp4 files are located.deepakdeshp wrote:Code: Select all

Re: What is the fastest way to convert mp4 to avi?
Ok got it, there was a typo in my above command, the correct command option is
-codec: copy
, not codecs:
Code: Select all
ffmpeg -i myvideo.mp4 -codec: copy myvideo.avi

Re: What is the fastest way to convert mp4 to avi?
After some googling I found that does convert the file . The speed is 500 kbits/s.. Is there any faster way to do this with ffmpeg?
I need to find a script which takes input list from a file and converts to .avi.
Code: Select all
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 output.avi

Great .... It converted the file in a minute while earlier the media player estimated to convert it in 80 minutes.. Thank youLaurent85 wrote:Ok got it, there was a typo in my above command, the correct command option is-codec: copy

Re: What is the fastest way to convert mp4 to avi?
It didn't convert anything. No video converter is that fast. All it did was remux the existing video and audio streams into an avi container. Does the file play?deepakdeshp wrote:Great .... Open the output file with Mediainfo (if you don't have it install mediainfo-gui and right click any media file to open it with mediainfo). If it doesn't have the same video and audio streams the input file has I'll frakkin' eat my hat.

Re: [Solved] What is the fastest way to convert mp4 to avi?
The ouput.avi file did play on my laptop with sound and video.
And yes since it works, I tried eating my hat but it wasnt tasty at all.
