Internal speakers don't work. [SOLVED]

well... to begin with this I will start giving the hardware data of the old desktop computer I'm having the problem with:

so, now the story of my attempts.

First I downloaded the 32 bit version of Linux mint 18 MATE, installed it with YUMI to a flash pendrive and booted the machine with it.
(yeah, that YUMI software is great for multiboot, I could also install Linux mint 18 KDE on that same pendrive to try it on a more powerful machine, but I digress)
Result? well, everything seemed fine, I could even connect to my wifi network with that old PC's wifi card! however, the only way to get sound was to plug headphones in the front output because the internal speakers (yeah, quite a complete machine for a rusty pentium 4 desktop that still runs windows XP) just give no sound at all! connecting the headphones in the back output only gave sound if they were connected before turning on the machine.
I tried installing pavucontrol (I have seen some threads where they suggest that for audio problems) without success since it could'nt be installed, it gave an error, bad thing I didn't copy it, but it was an access error, I guess it was because linux mint itself was not installed yet.

Anyways, looking for a lighter option, (seeing how the old machine cranked it's fans for cooling, just as it does with the already old and bloated installation of win XP) I downloaded 32 bit Linux mint 18 xfce. Same problem with the audio, everything else seemed fine. (on a side note, this machine seems to have a different way of handling the main cooler fan, turning it on only when required)

Now, it both cases I was just running mint live from the pendrive. Since the old PC is my parent's PC I wanted to have everything working, including the internal speakers.
I don't want to install the thing and find out that there's no way to get the internal speakers working. I had already had a bad moment with Ubuntu 14.04 and my new laptop's beats audio speakers, but that was different, sound did work, but it was just not as good as it was with windows, and it had something to do with the subwoofer that was not recognized.

So, what do you suggest?

Hello,

The only way I can set the output for my Xonar DGX in Linux Mint is by using the command line alsamixer. Using alsamixer, at Analog Output, I can choose between the Front Panel Headphones, Headphones and Multichannel (Rear Speakers). The GUI sound applets in Mint can't change it. It may be the same with the audio section of your computer. Try alsamixer from a terminal.

Hello! Thanks a lot for your advice! I was finally able to virtualize the aforementioned machine! Having that as a backup I finally installed Linux Mint Xfce! I had to use gnome-alsamixer to be able to turn on several things that I couldn't do neither with alsamixer nor with alsamixergui and voila! Everything worked! :D

Again thank you and God bless you!! I think I can now say this solved!

Hey! Guess what!? Everything was reset after shutting down! I had to go through all the process with gnome-alsamixer and unmute and set volume all over again!
Very annoying insn't it? But what else could be expected from a very old PC with a special setup that includes internal speakers when that's a feature that can only be expected from a laptop?
Anyways, this is how I solved it:

I mostly followed the instructions from this post at ask ubuntu:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/541847/i ... actl-store

Except that I made some changes for my special case:

This is what my .unmute file looks like

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash
sleep 30
/usr/bin/amixer -c 0 sset 'Master Mono' playback 100% unmute
exit

Besides of that I did what they said:
Edited .profile file :
and added this line at the end:

Code: Select all

bash .unmute &
Desktop Pentium D Linux Mint 17.3 Mate & Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon
Laptop HP Linux Mint 18.1 KDE

Freedom is the right of all sentient beings.
