No HDMI Audio (Solved, sort of)
Mint 17.3, Nvidia video card, AMD processor
This is a computer dedicated to running home videos and photographs through HDMI to family room TV.
Video and audio are both fine with Windows 7 so the graphics card is working OK.
With Mint 17.3, video is great but no sound at all.
I have looked at a lot of sites, gained a lot of confusion.
Sound output is set to HDMI output.
Any help?
Jerry

Re: No HDMI Audio
First thing I would do is install pavucontrol It gives slightly more control of sound.
open it and see if it says hdmi stero is activated make sure it's not muted. see if that helps. HDMI cable must be hooked up.
Good luck.
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install pavucontrol

Possible solution?
The HDMI port I am using on the TV is also associated with a pair of RCA jacks for sound input. According to the manual for the TV (surprise, I still have the manual!) says I can set that port to use either HDMI sound or analog sound. So I am going to try connecting the analog audio out of the computer to the analog input on the TV and set the computer sound output to analog. I have to dig through the junk box to find the appropriate cable but I am sure I have at least one. I will post the results here when I get around to trying that. It is interesting that using Windows 7 on the same computer there is no problem at all with the HDMI sound. I wanted to use Linux in the first place but VLC in Linux at that time would not properly play the 8gb per hour videos from my Canon camcorder. They worked perfectly on VLC in Windows 7. With Mint 17.3 (mate) VLC performance seems to be far better than it was a few years ago. SMPlayer seems to work well too.
Re: No HDMI Audio
Let us know how it works out for you, We should still be able to get hdmi going. Did you install pavucontrol?

I haven't gotten back on that computer yet. I am old and slow!

No HDMI Audio (Solved, sort of)
Pavucontrol did not solve the problem. I set the audio output from the computer to analog and connected it to the analog audio input connections for the HDMI port I am using. This works fine and solves my immediate problem but might not provide a general solution. Not all HDMI ports on TVs have the option of selecting analog audio input. The TV I am using has two HDMI ports - but only one has the analog audio input option.
For now, my problem is solved.

Re: No HDMI Audio (Solved, sort of)
Jerry,
Did you try (to set to HDMI audio)
and
to set it back to analogue?
Did you try (to set to HDMI audio)
Code: Select all
pactl set-card-profile 0 output:hdmi-stereo
Code: Select all
pactl set-card-profile 0 output:analog-stereo

to JusTertii:
No - I haven't tried those but I will make a record of them for the future.
Thanks!

Re: No HDMI Audio (Solved, sort of)
pavucontrol is nice but still no HDMI listed
why on a modern day system is HDMI is so difficult?
I plug in the external monitor or TV and it should work
without having to open a terminal every time to dick with the system
so when I plug in the HDMI I plug the speakers into the laptop instead of the monitor
I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PLUG THE SPEAKERS INTO THE COMPUTER!!!
this is not just Mint's fault but also Ubuntu which is basically what MInt is

Re: No HDMI Audio (Solved, sort of)
been messing around with all kinds of stuff
finally got it working but...
I had installed 'paprefs' trying to get simultaneous output from the HDMI Monitor & Built-In Audio
things went VERY BAD from this point
I uninstalled 'paprefs'
I reinstalled every audio package I could find
now I have NO sound
oh well...
time for another install of Linux Mint Mate 18.2...
finally got it working but...
Code: Select all
took me a while to figure this out
mate-volume-control
Sound Effects
which is messed up
volume setting can not be changed
after running my 'startup' script it works
Hardware
where you set the HDMI
all examples I have seen show two devices
but Mint does its' own thang
Built-In Audio will not show HDMI
go to Settings for the selected device:
Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output
you will have to switch back to internal...
make sure the monitor volume is set above zero
Input
Output
Applications

Code: Select all
$ start-pulseaudio-x11
Connection failure: Connection refused
pa_context_connect() failed: Connection refused
time for another install of Linux Mint Mate 18.2...
Re: No HDMI Audio (Solved, sort of)
OK, as usual I fixed it myself
most stuff I looked at was not quite right
like ~/.pulse which is actually ~.config/pulse
so I deleted that
then I wiped pulseaudio from the system
I reinstalled it but several packages needed manual installing
I think I got all the original packages...
strange that purging pulseaudio took out several packages
but installing pulseaudio did not put them back
one in particular - libcanberrra-pulse
without this the 'test speakers' function will not work
and who knows what else won't work...?
I got sound back
and the HDMI works
but...
no dual output
probably going to have to configure the sound when the laptop goes mobile
then reconfigure when the HDMI monitor is reattached...
MY GOD!
but sound in Linux SUCKS!

Re: No HDMI Audio (Solved, sort of)
Linux Mint 20.1 Live (with persistence enabled, using Rufus) 08/April/2021
I got it working by clicking on Volume icon > Audio mixer > Configuration tab > 3rd option down: (HDM) Output + Analog Stereo Input
Now it's working fine.
Nothing needed to be installed etc.
I use XFCE for desktop environment.
God bless you!
