'stuttering' on playback of Video or Audio clips

Post by LeighSharpe »

Hi All,
I have a brand new Lenovo H30 which I've just installed Mint 18 on. When playing either a video or an audio clip, I get a random stuttering, where it will go back roughly 200ms or so. Sometimes it happens once, sometimes it happens several times.
The clips I'm playing play fine on another PC. The CPU is only sitting at about 50% usage, and there's nothing else happeining on the machine.
It happens on xplayer, VLC and even when playing youtube clips.
There's nothing out of the ordinary in the syslog, or in Xorg.log.
Opening vlc or xplayer from the terminal shows no errors printed to the terminal when it plays up.
Any suggestions what might be causing it?

Model names don't tell you much so you need to generate some useful info. Copy/paste this into the temrinal and copy/paste the text output back:

It seems I've hit this bug: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1262957
Turning off WiFi has stopped the stuttering.
I can't say I'm completely happy with the fix, though. It feels more like a bandaid than a cure. My wireless card is different to what is in the bug referenced. I'd like to see this fixed properly. Where's the right place to file a bug report on this?

I found that my scenario here viewtopic.php?f=48&t=245907 is relating to the bug you posted. Instead of DISABLING the Wireless Network, you can try to connect to Internet during playback of video and see if you still encounter stutter. Just to prove if we're facing the same problem caused by the bug.

I had this problem on a desktop computer running Linux Mint 18.2 xfce with kernel 4.10.0-26

Complete cure by updating Audacious to version 3.8.2 and VLC to version 2.2.7 Umbrella

Hope this helps

I ran into a similar problem with stutter when playing audio and video.

I loaded Linux Mint 19 Tara 64 bit on two different machines and one has no stutter and the other does.

I first noticed periodic stuttering while using Clementine.
Then I noticed the same problem when streaming videos from Netflix and Amazon.
Then I also noticed the problem with YouTube videos.

So I did some searching and followed some of the suggestions I found, which are listed below the sys info for the 2 machines.
I just ran into your post above and checked to see if I turned off the Wireless function on the HP machine.
I currently don't use wireless, but I hadn't turned the wireless function off.
Once I turned it off, the stuttering stopped.
Is this supposed to be a required action when not using wireless? To turn it off?
It looks like a problem with the Realtek wireless adapter allowing it to continue to try and connect, which interrupts audio and video processing.
I would be interested to know the the developers are looking at this.

Cheers
Tim

I didn't have this issue when the HP machine was running Windows 10.

I don't use wireless to view YouTube videos or for streaming Netflix or Amazon on line.

I suspected that the issue was related to the new install of Mint since the thing I noticed was a stuttering when using Clementine.
So I made config changes to Clementine, that were suggested on line, to decrease processor use and had same issue.
So I switched to Rhythymbox and had the same issue.
So I switched audio and video player preference to VLC and had same issue.
So I decreased 'swappiness' to 10 as suggested by Joe Collins and had same issue.
So I tried turning on 'Write Cache' and had same issue.

So I tried reloading Mint 19 Tara on the HP machine with no improvement.

I researched the issue on the Mint Forum and on line, and made changes to Firefox preferences just to stuttersee if this would improve stutter for YouTube videos or Netflix streaming including:
Turning off Hardware Acceleration
Increasing 'browser.sessionstore.interval' from 15000 to 60000 as suggested in the video 'Speed up Firefox: Remove YouTube stuttering!'
Changing other config settings as suggested in the video 'How To Speed Up Mozilla Firefox - 2018'

None of these changes helped.

So I tried using Chrome to play YouTube and Netflix videos with no improvement.

I took a look at the Ezee-Talk forum and one of the threads discussed the same problem.
One of the posters said that turning off wireless in System Settings stopped the stutter.
I had turned this off on the Dell machine but forgot on the HP machine.
Once I turned it off on the HP machine, the stuttering stopped.
This isn't currently a problem since all of my machines are hardwired.
Does anyone know if turning off wireless is necessary if the machine is hardwired?
If it's not required, then it might be that the wireless adapter is still trying to connect and causes audio and or video stutter.
Any ideas here?
