Postby harmeetCA » Fri May 26, 2017 5:56 pm

I had v4.4 and upgraded to 4.8 and then 4.10 but the sound card isn't getting detected by Mint 18.1.

Following is the output for inxi -Fxz:

For aplay -l I get:

Code: Select all

aplay: device_list:268: no soundcards found...

I tried reinstalling sound drivers by running the following:

Code: Select all

sudo aptitude --purge reinstall linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils linux-image-`uname -r` linux-ubuntu-modules-`uname -r` libasound2

But the sound card still doesnt get detected after reboot.

Do you know what audio chip is used on the laptop? For audio chip commonly used with Kabylake processors like yours you may need Linux kernel 4.11: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page= ... nd-Updates

You can install 4.11 from mainline: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds. You can also install and use Ukuu to install mainline kernels: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2017/02/ukuu ... nel-ubuntu

I don't see 4.11 in the Kernels listed for me to download in the Update Manager. The sound card is working for now. I hope this isn't a random behaviour, as in sometimes get detected and sometimes it doesn't.

As noted if you need 4.11 you need to install it from mainline. You can't get it from Update Manager.

I had the exact same problem with my Kaby Lake XPS 13 when I bought it in early Feb.... What it came down to was this.... Check the bios to see fi the card is listed there. If not (as was my problem) it was due to flashing to the latest bios before installing Linux. I had to revert to a previous bios (I don't remember the rev levels off the top of my head) and the problem was reported by a few people in various forums. When I downgraded the bios, things worked fine. Installed Linux and upgraded the bios again and things kept working fine. Give this a try, you might be surprised.

I just looked at the output of inxi -Fxz on my laptop and noticed that you are at bios v 1.2.3... Try going up to version 1.3.2 and see if that fixes things. To the OP, try dropping to 1.3.2.
