Further data :

0- This machine also boots into Windows. The Windows Device Manager shows the sound chip as Conexant 20672 SmartAudio HD. Audio works just fine.

o- When AlsaMixer is run, it shows card as HDA Intel PCH, and chip as Conexant CX20590

o- When Pulse Audio Volume Control is run, on the Output Devices tab, the bar graph under Built-in Audio Analog Stereo shows sound data moving through the system

Any ideas on where to begin troubleshooting ?

thx

I did the following :

Reinstalled the driver

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa-base pulseaudio
 sudo apt-get install alsa-base pulseaudio
Reloaded the driver

Code: Select all

 sudo alsa force-reload
Then rebooted. I now had sound, which I checked by playing a video.

Then sound went away. I toggled Auto-Mute in AlsaMixer from Disabled to Enabled to Disabled, and sound came back again.

Some weird bug going on, eh ?? All thoughts invited.

I would be running cinnamon on this laptop it more than powerful enough why are you running xfce? I am planning on getting a T520 myself I got to decide on which first. I know that laptop has a Intel 3000. Disable the nvidia in the BIOS and use the Intel. Nvidia GPU's eat battery life most of the time. Nvidia Optimus really only works in windows.
