The sound works just fine when I boot into the live USB image and everything appears correct (sound cards appear and are configured) but no sound ever comes out. The VU meter on pavucontrol bounces all around while playing something with audio. It even shows my headphones plugged in. I have run through every single audio debugging tutorial I can find and have had no luck.

Check to see if audio is muted.I believe it is muted by default on a fresh install'

I have gone through alsamixer and muted then unmuted every single channel. I have unloaded and reloaded the kernel modules. I have changed the default sound card in asound.conf. Everything "looks right" but no sound comes out. I reboot onto my USB stick with the installer on it and I get sound immediately without any configuration whatsoever. Flawless on the USB stick. Flawed on the install.
