No Sound

Postby Caltrop » Wed Aug 23, 2017 3:44 pm

I had sound...

Uninstalled a couple of programs I didn't like and not NO Sound.

Tried several fixes and they did not work.
Some fixes involved the Terminal.
One said to install Pavucontrol, it will not run.

Like I said I used to have sound.

Also I noticed the Sound Preferences shows I only have mono now but I still can't hear anything.
No system sounds, no YouTube, nothing!

There's actually almost no useful info there.

What programs did you uninstall? When you install/uninstall there will be a list of programs to be added or removed. You need to read that stuff.

What fixes did you try?

And what's in your system? Copy/paste this to the terminal and copy/paste the text output here:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz

Code: Select all

sudo aplay -L

Tried EVERYTHING!

Does not matter anyway, I'm installing Debian as soon as I post this.

Goodbye Mint!

I'm back...

That's SIX hours of my life I'll NEVER get back.
Debian...

Good news though. Reinstalling Mint fixed my sound problem!

Everything is tweeting & beeping as it should. And glorious STEREO sound is back again.

I'd really like to know what the !@#$% happened. All I can think of was uninstalling a couple of programs I did not like.

It's generally not advisable to remove default programs in Mint because, as you found, it can also remove other stuff which was dependent on it, even if you don't use the "unwanted" program itself. Fortunately most included programs don't take up much space.

For future reference, you can check what's been added and/or removed by looking at the dpkg log file.
