sound thru hdmi and headphone but not laptop speakers

Have been working on this some time and its bothering me not being able to figure out. I have tried alsa reload, fresh reinstall over several versions of linux and ubuntu specifically. Everything is found durinng searches has not worked. Pauvcontrol shows playback happening. Also both hdmi and on board sounnd show up but no sound after playing with those settings

What else can i do?? Please help this is killing my productivity to have hdmi hooked up for anything sound related.

Try installing pavucontrol and using that to set the output device.

This sounds like a headphone jack issue. Most of the laptops have a headphone jack that opens the contacts in the line that return to the speakers to enable them. The HDMI is tapped in before the headphone jack. Did you push a headphone plug into the jack and out a few times. Also check the jack with headphones to see if audio is there.
Out of dozens of laptops I have found about 1 in 20 has this problem. Gold contacts went a long way to helping this, Silver was not too bad either.
