Never burned a DVD

Hello all...

I've never been able to burn a Cd or DVD with Linux on any computer with any application. It is one of the things in Linux in my experience that, like audio configuration, historically has simply not worked well, and if it does, until it does, is still ridiculously difficult to get working.
I'm using an HP Laptop; LM 18.2 is on a usb. There are Win7 partitions yes, on hdd which based on need may or may not be turned on or off.

Burning didn't work with LM 16 or 17 either.
CDW, Xfburn, Brasero, K3b. None of them work. I am not sure what to post besides this fact that would help anyone understand what the problem(s) could be, but here are the logs for the last two applications, CDW and Xfburn (Brasero and K3b have since been removed from the system). If the logs of these latter applications are needed, I'll gladly install them again and get their err output as well. I hope someone is able to make sense of this, or what I am doing or not. Xfburn says it all: "Medium error". And mkisofs complains about an I/O error.

Which means: bad hardware. Rotten disks and/or broken DVD burner. Buy some new stuff...

Alternative explanation: apparently you're running Mint not from an internal hard disk, but from a USB medium. This might complicate matters.

About your generalization: *your* experience, not mine. In my Linux decade, DVD burning always went (and still goes) very well, provided you use the right tool (Xfburn).

Did I forget to mention that the laptop is only a year old? Should I go out and buy a new laptop? Really? Besides, Win works fine (& please..."well in that case use Windows" is not a solution to a Linux problem, if that's anyone's solution to the problem)
Rotten disks? All NEW. I DID specifically state MY experience. NO generalization and historic issue with Linux CD/DVD burning is a fact. Maybe not for "you"...but that doesn't change facts. There are a TON of complaints about this same issue...always has been.

Also: if that is true then it is true for Puppy, Kali, Tails and any device (including smartphones and old PCs) any other (lw) distro that is run in memory. (GOOGLE: "how to Install Linux on USB" = 1,720,000 hits) C'mon... . Sounds like a "generalization" to me. Point is; what if I told you that DVD burning works from a VM inside of Linux installed on a USB? Then what? I don't know (yet) that it does, but I'm just saying. Peace.

I am only saying that I have yet to successfully burn a CD or DVD in Linux...regardless of hardware platform, device or media, and am not alone in this regard; those who have not had any issues obviously have nothing to report. So the post is intended to point out that there IS an issue and to discover what it may be, whether it's a development issue or end-user issue or not; to try and isolate why the problem exists in the first place, that should not (imo) be as much trouble these days as network printers were in the old days.

- it's generally suggested to Burn At The Slowest Speed Available . .
sure, that's a real nuisance, if you are burning a full sized DVD, as it will take 30min+.

so, do try this out, with your current disk(s) & burner.
- the option to change the speed, should appear, after you tell it to burn,
and just before the final OK to proceed.

& I've had issues, in the past, when leaving the burner on Default / Auto settings,
where that has left me with a lot of failed disk(s).
- so I've changed that burn rate to the slowest setting & that did work OK.

Have you tried different media? Sometimes that can make a big difference too.

For me Memorex DVD-R works the best using K3B at a slower speed (8X in my case.) Sometimes dust can impair the DVD writing head. This can be especially true if the DVD does not get used a lot. Also check your drive cables and make sure that they are installed correctly.

Burning a DVD is pretty cool! I hope you find your solution...

Oh my friend surely I've been through the speed ringer...have played with setting after setting to no avail. Here's the thing that concerns me though; once the burn fails (regardless why) it's to be assumed that sectors have been written to preparing the burn, which in the case of an DVD-R officially trashes a fresh disc. The last time I had that sort of issue (without knowing why the discs weren't writable) was with Win and Roxy. I went through a quarter of a spindle before I discovered the problem was a loose / bad IDE cable. I mention this (almost) in passing since none of these applications indicate after burn failure whether the disc is still writable or not, and experience has taught me that it is likely not. Now I don't know if that 'rule' applies to Linux, yet I don't expect the way sectors are operated on to change... So I won't keep trying "to make the same call with a different quarter" if you get what I mean. Linux may be able to work magic but not miracles. Peace.

Curious problem. Does the DVD play DVD's? If not it may be set up for the wrong zone (SE asia, India, south america ETC...). I have run into this on some imported carry in laptops. I don't have the command sequence at my fingertips until next week.
If : [inxi -Fxzd*]does not work there is something the matter with the install.

I have no doubt that this is truly your experience-on the other hand I enjoin the others who have never encountered this problem.
This is one of the basic things I check when installing new os, although I use it less and less these days.
A couple things to check--open a terminal and copy/paste or enter the following:
more /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info
and
cdrecord -prcap
perhaps some clues will be revealed there.
