What application do I install to play BluRay disks?

Post by rgand »

I have Linux Mint 18.2 Cinnamon 64-bit on an ASUS G75VW laptop. All updates are current.

The DVD payer gave up so i installed a DVD/BluRay drive. What application do I install to play BluRay disks? The new drive reads anything I put in it, including the files on a bluRay disk. It plays music like never before. I just need to know what to install so it will play the BluRay disks.

Thanks, RG

Unfortunately, you don't. Blu-ray is proprietary. When I had to repartition my Windows computer due to a Windows 10 "upgrade" and go back to Windows 7, my Blu-ray no longer worked. It was installed as part of the original sale but didn't get reinstalled on rebuild. You can probably PAY to get something, which is pretty much what you have to do in Windows. There are ways to bypass the security and encryption but that's your call. I don't bother with Blu-ray any more. Too much trouble.

OK, thanks for that. I may look into purchasing something but I'll be in no rush for that.

You can play Blu-Ray discs in Linux, but it's kind of a pain. A couple of articles:

And the Arch wiki has an article, too:

Thank you both for the links. MakeMKV Beta looks like the way to go. I'll take some time and start fiddling with it. I really appreciate the help.
