An update solved the problem journaled below in this thread.

The Native Sound control in Mint Cinnamon with 18.3 keeps seeing, under System Settings -> Sound -> Applications, the volume dropping to zero every time a new youtube video starts or any other firefox audio item.

I also had a problem with getting the front headphone to work that I solved with using QasMixer to manually turn ON the headphone bay. The two seem to be separate issues but I cannot be sure.

At first this wasn't happening, but for the last few days it now happens. I just updated the kernel and it still happens.

It doesn't happen with Chromium, seems firefox specific.

I have this exact problem. I am new-ish to linux as I have never mastered it and thought it was just something I needed to figure out which is what I was trying to do. I have cinnamon 17.3 and am using firefox 57. I am using pavucontrol with sometimes audio not going to zero but sometimes it does also there are individual streams per youtube tab. I have the addon AutoMute that mutes tabs automatically but I have firefox whitelisted. I have media.volume_scale set to 3.0 and media.default_volume set to 5. I did the scale from past experience due to low volume and tried the default volume as a reccomendation for the current zero vol issue I'm having. My soundcard is the Asus Xonar U7 with a 2.0 Speaker setup. I don't know if the issue was present at fresh install. I did my updates and it shown that there was a new kernal update but it didn't install right away I manually installed it.

Update: I also have the Enhancer for Youtube addon in case anyone else with this issue has this or the AutoMute addon installed.

Problem still exists after updates with firefox only, but firefox is what I use.

I've never reported to developers on an issue, I wonder if this is such a reason to do so and how I go by doing it.

Out of curiosity do you have an external sound card?

No, and yes:

I have an ASUS Z97 Pro motherboard with on board sound, it's supposed to be good for on board sound in the price range. BUT, I DO have a pair of usb logitech headphones with mic that obviously have some sort of sound controller built into the cord also. I do not experience problems at this time using the heaphones, but two issues with the on motherboard controller:

Front headset/output wasn't working and I had to search for a mixer and found Qasmixer that solved that problem.

And the other, current problem, that firefox audiot keeps resetting to zero volume once any youtube video or whatever ends, I have to literally go into my sound settings with each successive song start and push the volume back up to something other than zero. This is not after startingclose browser, but all the time.

I need to run my system some more, but it appears some update fixed this problem, at least right now I started a youtube music video and it played right out with the FF software volume at about 75%.
