OpenShot is brilliant ...in theory. The problem is it falls over on its back with its legs kicking helplessly in the air if the wind so much as blows the wrong way.
Does anyone know of anything similar that's actually reliable? Everything else I've found is either aimed at professionals or is even more basic than OpenShot.
Any alternatives to OpenShot for video editing?

Re: Any alternatives to OpenShot for video editing?
Yep, the latest one. Not the one in the Mint repository as that's ancient. The big difference is that 2.1 freezes all the time rather than actually shutting itself down. Either way it's completely useless.
Re: Any alternatives to OpenShot for video editing?
I have been using Openshot for some time now, and providing I save my work regularly I do not have a problem with it.
My version is 1.4.3

Hi "dreamkatcha",
I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.
It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" and "lsusb" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.
There are a lot of video editors available in addition to the really nice OpenShot. There are also a few reasons why video editors crash that have nothing to do with the software, but under-powered computer hardware, or user actions.

Re: Any alternatives to OpenShot for video editing?
Thanks for all the great suggestions everyone. Yes, it might be worth dabbling with some of the older versions if they're kept online for people to experiment with. Before OpenShot started freezing after every action I managed to throw together a couple of decent videos that combined MP3 audio, video and pictures along with a few transitions, which is why it's such a shame the editor is so flakey.
I thought the developer took a few backwards steps with the latest version (e.g. where the clip properties menu is concerned), but generally it's a big improvement over what's available in the Mint repository.
In the meantime I found an alternative called Shotcut which is proving very reliable for me. So far I'm really impressed - the interface makes perfect sense once you realise it is a fully featured editor rather than a clip trimmer, as it first appears because the timeline and playlist are hidden. I started using it a few hours ago and now my first video is exporting so the learning curve isn't steep at all, even for amateurs like me.
Hope these reports tells you something useful...

It may be 'ancient' but it apparently works in your Mint release, unlike the version you have.dreamkatcha wrote:Yep, the latest one. Not the one in the Mint repository as that's ancient. This is mostly why I stick to repo software.

Re: Any alternatives to OpenShot for video editing?
That was the problem in the first place - I tried the Mint approved one and found that just nudging the time slider would cause the editor to crash nine times out of ten. I did some research and found out that it had been upgraded so manually installed the latest one instead. I'd have been perfectly happy with the Mint version if it had been stable since it's such an intuitive first step into movie editing. Some of the pro ones make my head spin.
