Monitor is jerky

A few days ago I performed a clean install of LM 18.3 32-Bit Mate on a Dell Laptop. Whenever I try to see any videos, the sound is smooth, but the video stops and starts randomly. Not sync to the audio. I'm I missing some drivers or codecs that could cause this? All the necessary updates were installed at start up after the clean installation. Any help will be appreciated, thanks.

Yes, the graphics card is weak, and having a single core CPU isn't helping either. Don't bother looking for drivers ... the open source one you have is it.

First thing I'd do is go to the settings and turn off ALL desktop compositing. Forget the eye candy. I haven't had Mate installed for a while but it should be in settings > desktop settings.

... and remember that setting swappiness to 10 is just a suggestion. My 1Gb netbbok running 17.3 Xfce runs fastest with swappiness set to 40. I've also never found that dicking around with the inode cache helped either but the ideas there are good. But don't expect miracles.
