certain programs lock mic

im using a amd apu equipped laptop with a plantronics headset with Linux mint 18.3 64 bit , the problem is certain apps like discord (Linux version) will lock the microphone where it wont work anything else while voice is activated ive installed the pulse audio configuration application , I have no problems with outputs its just inputs ,is there a work around for this or is there an alternative to pulse audio i can use without ill effects to my system ? thank you in advance
