LMMS not showing up in Menu.

Hello,

I installed LMMS onto Linux Mint Cinnamon 64-bit 18.2. But LMMS is not in the Menu. I have tried to install it a few times. Software Manager shows no green checkmark for LMMS. LMMS-common (the extra files) were installed more than once and show as installed. Other music, video, CD/DVD burning programs show up.

Can I look somewhere it is installed? Linux has a different set of directories than Windows, there isn't a Program Files folder it's called something else.

Odd. Maybe something different between 18 and 18.2, but I just tried it out, and it installed fine.

For location, you can type lmms in to Nemo's search bar, and wait for search results to return. Should see many things lmms-related. The executable is in the /usr/bin folder, simply named "lmms." My results returned 5 folders/50 items.
(To get a quick count on your return results, just push Ctl+A, and read totals on the bottom bar.)

ps.. it also shows up in Menu, under Sound & Video.

Maybe they have not updated something with a Level 4 update to the kernel?

If it doesn't seem to be installed at all, try installing one more time, then right away go look at your/var/log/dpkg.log, at the tail end, and read through the details. Also, look at /var/log/apt/history.log, at the tail end, and see what the summary of the install attempt says. Should also be able to see the installation progress log in the tail end of /var/log/apt/term.log.

I have re-intalled more than once. Nothing in the menu.

I do nto have permission to access the log's. How do I access them?

Can you open any log and read it (they will normally open in read-only mode)? For example, can you open/read /var/log/sys.log, or /var/log/kern.log? If not, then perhaps you have some permissions issues.

Is your User Account Type a Standard User, or Administrator?

What groups does your user account belong to (ie; "adm", "sudo"). Go to Menu --> Administration --> Users & Groups to look and see.

Can you run this--> ls -l /var/log in terminal, and post results back in a Code box?

Here's a snippet from a /var/log list; yours should be similar, with respect to the permissions on the left, the owners, and groups.

First three characters= permissions for the user that owns the file, second three characters= permissions for members of the group that owns the file, third set of three characters are permissions for all other users on the system. The r-- in blue means you can read them, if you belong to group "adm".

Hopefully this isn't going off in a totally wrong direction, but it's peculiar that you can't read log files. By the way, I'm guessing you've not had issues installing other programs? Have you tried creating a different user, and logging in/installing the LMMS program?

Only me and a guest account at this time. Administrator, groups: adm, cdrom, dip, lpadmin, plugdev, sambashare, sudo

I double clicked the log files. Should I be using the terminal?
All other programs worked, and extra packages or add-ons. All other audio-video prograams worked.
I don't know how to make those Code boxes for the forums, how can I?
I understand the idea about permissions, someone gave me a YouTube channel in another post. But I need to learn a little more to set everything.

You should be able to right-click on them, and open with TextEditor or gedit if you have it. Alternatively, while in the /var/log folder, you can right-click, and then select "open in terminal." Do a ls command in terminal to see contents list of folders/files. Then, try sudo xed dpkg.log, (or whatever file you want to view) enter your password, and see if it will open that way. You should be able to read these log files. Afraid I'm running out of ideas here, other than trying to install LMMS on a new user account with proper rights. Your permissions lists appears correct.

I was wondering about the permissions lists from a newbie perspective. Is my system currently more vulnerable and should I change some of the permissions? From what videos I watched and what I read, I think I should limit everyone, all other esxtra accoutns and everything down to read and write (unless default is only read), except the administrator(s). Any suggestions or tips?

The system permissions in Linux Mint have very reasonable settings, and as such should not normally need to be modified.

Do you plan on having a lot of users on your machine that you don't know/trust? For maximum user privacy, you can follow the excerpt below to change individual users permissions to 700 (users can only access their own home folders)

For /home/your_users:

...home directories- The users' home directories are important because you do not want other users to be able to view and modify the files in another user's documents of desktop. To remedy this you will want the directory to have the drwx______ (700) permissions, so lets say we want to enforce the correct permissions on the user user1's home directory that can be done by issuing the command chmod 700 /home/user1....

If the other potential users are just ordinary users (browsing, file editing, email, etc...and not installing software programs), then in Menu --> Administration --> Users & Groups you can also, per-user as you see fit, make sure they are Standard users, and ensure that sudo is not listed in their Groups.

As you already know "LMMS " is in the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM), but you can also download their AppImage file from the link below.

I do not know why LMMS does not show up in your menus, but you can remove it completely (purge it), then reinstall it.

This is the correct answer. I'm one of the lmms developers (used to be a mod here, years ago...).
lmms-1.2 is almost done baking and the Beta, currently lmms-1.2.0-rc5, is more stable than 1.1.3 which is in most linux repoitories.

I also recommend installing appimaged which is a daemon that detects AppImages and ensures they show up in the menu.

There is a recent post on using Teamviewer's archive file as a portable option which workes great! Teamviewer is superb and one of, if not, the best remote control application available.

I don't know. I haven't heard of any menu issues recently. I have lmms-1.1.3 installed from the Ubuntu repositories and it works just fine.
