When I experienced this problem running Cinnamon I fixed it like so...
sudo apt-get install i965-va-driver
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sander-vangrieken/vaapi
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mplayer-vaapi
With XFCE I can install the driver, but when I try to add the repository I get the error...
Cannot add PPA: ''This PPA does not support xenial"
Does anyone know how to fix this please?

Yes. Find another PPA. That one has been dead for 4 years.dreamkatcha wrote: ⤴Mon Feb 12, 2018 4:22 pm Cannot add PPA: ''This PPA does not support xenial"

Re: Choppy video with new XFCE installation
Thanks for the reply. I managed to solve the problem by installing the Compton composite manager via a .deb file.
