Sound not working in Mint 18.3

Post by rickshaw »

I recently installed Mint 18.3.

My sound has stopped working.

I have a Asus M5a97 R2.0 motherboard.

Is it possible to get some help on this, please?

Please generate an overview of your system like this:
- Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window);
- make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;
- Copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter)

Press Enter.

Copy/paste the output in your next message.

I am presently running my old Mint 17.3 system until I fix the sound problem on the 18.3 system. It too lacks sound.

First of all, install the latest kernel of the 4.4 series. Should be a level 5 update. Then reboot and test again.

Update it to the latest of its series, i.e. 4.4.0-116.

Then reboot and test the sound again.

Run this command and the output post inside code brackets not to take space like the command below.

Code: Select all

pactl set-sink-mute 0 0 ; pactl list sinks ; lspci -v | grep -A7 -i "audio" ; lsmod

Audio: Card-1 NVIDIA GK107 HDMI Audio Controller
driver: snd_hda_intel bus-ID: 01:00.1
Card-2 Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
driver: snd_hda_intel bus-ID: 00:14.2
Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture v: k4.4.0-116-generic
This just might help:
Install alsamixergui. Open a terminal and run:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install alsamixergui
Run the alsamixer in the terminal:

Code: Select all

alsamixer
Press F6 and choose the one or the other of your sound cards and test if the sound works.
Somtimes force reloading alsa could help. To do that open a terminal and run:

Code: Select all

sudo alsa force-reload
It will take some seconds before it is done. Reboot your computer and see if you get any sound.

cheers

This just might help:
Install alsamixergui. Open a terminal and run:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install alsamixergui
Run the alsamixer in the terminal:

Code: Select all

alsamixer
Press F6 and choose the one or the other of your sound cards and test if the sound works.
Somtimes force reloading alsa could help. To do that open a terminal and run:

Code: Select all

sudo alsa force-reload
It will take some seconds before it is done. Reboot your computer and see if you get any sound.

cheers
Sound still not working. :( :(

Don't be rude since nobody pay us and we do it from our free time and energy.

Try to rename the pulseaudio folder .config/pulse to pulse.back when you reboot will make a new one.

I am aware that you are not being paid. However, it is strange that suddenly nothing is being done to help me. I have researched this problem extensively but there appears to be no obvious answer. I apologise if I have offended you.

Done that, still no sound.

Hi rickshaw,
You could try reinstalling Alsa and Pulse audio in the following manner:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa-base pulseaudio

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install alsa-base pulseaudio
And force reload Alsa again:

Code: Select all

sudo alsa force-reload
Reboot and see if it will work.

alsa-base is already the newest version (1.0.25+dfsg-0ubuntu5).
pulseaudio is already the newest version (1:8.0-0ubuntu3.8).
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  libwraster5 mokutil
Use 'apt autoremove' to remove them.
0 to upgrade, 0 to newly install, 0 to remove and 1 not to upgrade.

Sorry to point out the quite obvious, it is sometimes easy to overlook. Have you checked in the Pulse Audio Volume Control that you have the proper settings?
