speaker crackles running cinnamon 18.1 from SSD but not from Live DVD or Full Install USB

Post by daBrewer » Wed Mar 07, 2018 12:15 pm

Greetings,

I've had a sound problem on my Acer Aspire F5-573-55LV laptop since I purchased it a year ago with Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.1 pre-installed. Secure Boot disabled. UEFI mode. No Windows. A crackling sound coming from the right built-in speaker occurs as soon as Linux Loads. If I mute the speakers, the crackling ceases. Adjusting the speaker volume has no affect on the volume of the crackling, unless I adjust the volume to 0%, which will stop the crackling. If I plug in headphones, the crackling from the right built-in speaker stops and there is no crackling in the headphones.
Sometimes after the OS has been running for several hours, the crackling will suddenly stop for no apparent reason.

Acer support suggested I check the speakers cable connection inside the laptop. The connector was fully inserted. So I disconnected and reconnected the cable, but the crackling still sounds like Morse Code tapping. Acer tech suggested an audio driver update. When I told him I run Linux OS he said they don't support Linux, only Windows.

I have installed all the updates, firmware, and kernels via Update Manager since I first got the machine. I have PulseAudio Volume Control. I also upgraded to 18.2 via Update Manager. The right speaker crackle persists.

However, if I run a Live DVD of Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.2 in UEFI, Secure Boot Disabled, there is no crackling.
Or if I run an 18.2 Full Install USB drive in Legacy mode there is no crackling.
I got both drives from OSDisc.com. in order to troubleshoot this problem.

This makes me think it's either the laptop's SSD or the Mint OS installed on it, since a Live DVD and a Full Install USB do not experience the crackle. Could it be PulseAudio's installation on the laptop SSD OS?

Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thank You.
