[SOLVED] Linux Mint 18.3 Sound not working "dummy output"

Post by leumatic »

I recently had to reinstall Mint 18 and although the sound had worked perfectly before, on reinstall (exact same OS) the sound is not working and I'm showing a dummy output in the sound settings. I tried purging pulseaudio and alsa and reinstalling alsa as described here viewtopic.php?f=48&t=262421&p=1419724&h ... t#p1419724, but no luck. I also verified that everything was up-to-date (as described here viewtopic.php?t=188943 ) but again, no luck.

According to

Code: Select all

lshw
my sound card exists but is unclaimed

Code: Select all

I realized I forgot to try to troubleshoot pulseaudio, as was possibly suggested by the reaction to sudo alsa force-reload. According to the pulseaudio page, I run

rm -r ~/.config/pulse; pulseaudio -k

and I rebooted. Now it works! :)

Until someone that knows what they're talking about comes along, I'll offer this:

Code: Select all

[ 4.145617] snd_hda_core: loading out-of-tree module taints kernel.
 ...
[ 4.313501] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1f.3: Probing card using HDA DKMS, version 0.201803172116~ubuntu17.10.1

It looks to me like you've done something unusual as 18.3 is based on Ubuntu 16.04, yet you're showing 17.10 in that output.

I wish I could help more.

I installed oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms in case it was a driver issue, but that didn't work so I removed it.

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep snd
now reads

Code: Select all

Some searching suggests trying this:

gksudo xed /etc/modprobe.d/intel.conf (replace xed with your text editor)

Add these 2 lines:

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel single_cmd=1
options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1
Save the file and reboot.

Good luck.

Already tried that one. I also tried booting with Ubuntu, but that also gave me dummy output.

Borrowing from another thread:
asinoro wrote: Sat Mar 03, 2018 3:14 am You did that before.

Code: Select all

gksudo xed /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
At the bottom of the file change 3stack to auto.

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel model=auto
Save close reboot and check your sound.
You'll be adding instead of changing in this case.
