Video playing too fast,no sound

Post by billpay »

This video I'm trying to play is playing way to fast.
From Mediainfo - AVI (DV) Video Stream AVI (DV)
Have tried converting with Handbrake ,Kino, and a bunch of other Editing programs. They show that it is converted but still play fast. Nothing is working. All other videos on hard drive play ok. I'm all googled out on this one.

What video? And why do you think it's playing too fast?

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
would also be good.
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!
Your data and OS are backed up....right?

Sorry about "this Video" should have been "a video".
It is just a short family video off an USB drive. I can tell its playing fast because the people walking look like the Charlie Chaplin movies of the early 1900's.All other videos play fine.

...when you run mediainfo on the file, what framerate (fps) does it report?

...29.97 is normal ntsc - is there any player that doesn't play it in 'charlie-chaplin' mode?
Reason i'm asking is because different players use different underlying engines:
hence i find it very difficult that multiple players would all exhibit the same bug...

You could try re-building the .avi file in question as well, say in case it's index got corrupted.
Since you already have Avidemux installed, let's try the easy gui-based method: Video output: copy, Audio output:copy, Output format: AVI...

No go on Avidemux......The only other thing on mediainfo shows the "writing application:Adobe Premier Pro" although I don't think this has anything to do with it????

Am appreciating you help...

...to be honest, i don't really have many other suggestions. mediainfo -f oldfamilyvideo.avi will give you full details on it.
It will also tell you if it actually contains audio, and which codec(s) were used in the first place.

Pretty much the only other thing that comes to mind would be trying to rebuild the file via other tools:
ffmpeg -i oldfamilyvideo.avi -vcodec copy -acodec copy repaired.avi
An older command that i haven't used since ages (hence no idea if it would still work), via mencoder:
sudo apt-get install mencoder
mencoder -forceidx oldfamilyvideo.avi -o repaired.avi -oac copy -ovc copy
You could also have a look at avifix from transcode (sudo apt-get install transcode).

But as said above, if multiple different players behave the same, then this simply means that the file wasn't properly encoded in the first place...
I could understand 1-2 players being 'broken' & not decoding properly older video / audio codecs, but how many of them?
It would seem more likely to me that the file was loaded on some video editing app & speed-up on purpose back in the day...

THX-1138...Have tried all your suggestions..nothing worked. Will have to go back to the source and see what's going on with this video. Thank you for your time.
P.S. Am learning more than I need to. But it's been fun.
