Graphics lagging since the virtualbox-guest issues yesterday. (edit: added inxi -SGxx)

Post by Douglas Bondurant »

Hi all, not particularly savvy, so please bear with me.

18.3 64 Cinnamon

Code: Select all

System: Host:xxxxx-Aspire-V3-472 Kernel: 4.4.0-53-generic x86_64 (64 bit gcc: 5.4.0)
Desktop: Cinnamon 3.6.7 (Gtk 3.18.9-1ubuntu3.3) dm: mdm
           Distro: Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia
Graphics: Card: Intel Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Controller
           bus-ID: 00:02.0 chip-ID: 8086:0a16
Display Server: X.Org 1.18.4 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev, vesa)
           Resolution: 1366x768@60.06hz, 1920x1080@60.00hz
GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.8, 256 bits)
GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 11.2.0 Direct Rendering: Yes
I updated the virtualbox-guest packages yesterday, dealt with the login-in issues, uninstalled virtualbox, was able to log in, and ever since it seems like my GPU isn't functioning properly. Everything graphics - related is lagging, video from file, streaming video, os animations, even text input. I expect you all will need more info than I've given, so have at it. I'm trying to get this fixed up quickly because the baseball season starts Thursday and the only way I have to watch my team is through streaming... plus, you know, it's generally annoying.

I did upgrade from 18.1 to 18.3 and have vbox again as well as the update to fix the issues that was released yesterday.

Thanks in advance,

DB

No one sounds like they're having the same issues there, but I'll go ahead and post it there too, I guess. I hope posting it in multiple places isn't bad form...

Code: Select all

GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.8, 256 bits)
You are using software rendering
Intel hardware rendering use Mesa DRI
Do you using video driver PPA :?:

check file : /etc/environment
if you are see line :

Code: Select all

LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1
delete it. Save and reboot

Edit - try the above first and see if that helps if not......

Cinnamon is using software rendering mode rather than your GPU. It might be fixed by a reboot, or possibly trying to reboot with a different kernel. Before we try that it would be good to check your logs for relevant errors.

Assuming your not running Mint as a Virtualbox guest try this to hopefully provide some relevant error messages.

1) xed ~/.xsession-errors to open this file in your text editor. Scroll to the end of the file.

2) Hit Ctrl-Alt-Esc to force a Cinnamon restart.

Edit to fix typo in xed command.

3) Go back to the text editor - if it tells you the file is updated and asks if you want to reload say yes and then copy and paste whatever new lines have been added as a result of the Cinnamon restart into code tags in your reply.

4) Finally run cat ~/.cinnamon/glass.log in a terminal and again copy and paste the output into code tags.

As wrote in: viewtopic.php?f=47&t=266431&start=80#p1449961 I've the same problem.

In my /etc/environment is no such line and reboot doesn't help.

.xsession-errors tells me:

maybe libgl1-mesa removed?
see with package manager if libgl1-mesa-dri and libgl1-mesa-glx still installed

or you can try reconfigure xserver-xorg

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-video-intel xserver-xorg-core libgl1-mesa-dri libgl1-mesa-glx
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Sadly, the problem ist back :( I dont know why. After booting today it shows me - again:

Code: Select all

System: Host: XXX Kernel: 4.13.0-37-generic x86_64 (64 bit gcc: 5.4.0)
Desktop: Cinnamon 3.6.7 (Gtk 3.18.9-1ubuntu3.3) dm: mdm
           Distro: Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia
Graphics: Card: Intel Sky Lake Integrated Graphics
           bus-ID: 00:02.0 chip-ID: 8086:1912
Display Server: X.Org 1.18.4 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev, vesa)
           Resolution: 1920x1080@60.00hz
GLX Renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 5.0, 256 bits)
GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 17.2.8 Direct Rendering: Yes
I played with different Kernel-versions, reinstalled and reconfigured xserver-xorg again, but it didnt make any differences

Edit: I'm confused. I only restarted Cinnamon via Ctrl+Alt+Esc and the driver is back to work.

When you next reboot and log-in check what session is set by default before logging in. I'm wondering if somehow the software rendering session has been set as default?

How you check will depend on whether you are on slickgreeter/lightDM or MDM. IIRC correctly it's a pretty obvious choice in MDM - is slick greeter you need to click the little cinnamon icon next to the username.

1) xed ~/.xsessions-errors to open this file in your text editor. Scroll to the end of the file.

2) Hit Ctrl-Alt-Esc to force a Cinnamon restart.

I got
Krell ~ $ xed ~/.xsessions-errors

** (xed:19679): WARNING **: Error when getting information for file '/home/ron/.xsessions-errors': No such file or directory

** (xed:19679): WARNING **: Set document metadata failed: Error setting file metadata: No such file or directory

WHAT does this mean?

Sorry a typo in my post - the command should be xed ~/.xsession-errors

Edit to add.....someone has noted it is just a case of the Software rendering session being selected as default at logon....viewtopic.php?f=47&t=266431&start=120#p1452222
