Dvd's won't play <SOLVED>

Post by caraluna »

Hello all, I've been using Linux for several years now and can usually find workarounds for whatever problems I have by searching online and the forums. However, this issue has me puzzled. I'm using a dvd drive that's built in my laptop and I can't play dvds that I once could play in the past. I've installed ubuntu-restricted-extras, libdvdcss, and other codecs, tried different dvds, using an external dvd drive and nothing seems to be working.

While I can usually figure stuff out please treat me as a newbie as I'm not very terminal literate. I know how to use one but don't know a lot about how the tests and outputs work.

Thank you all :)

Do you have a music player/organizer such as Clementine or Amarok installed?

HI caraluna,

Welcome to the wonderful world of Linux Mint and its excellent forum!

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" and "lsusb" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

Try installing "udftools" with its recommended and suggested packages from the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM) or from the console terminal, then retry playing the DVD discs. May have to restart any multimedia players, or your computer after installing this.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install udftools

Hope this helps ...

I had already installed udftools and it still didn't work. I also tried to play cd's and they worked fine so I don't think it's a hardware issue. Here are the results from the terminal you requested.

Maybe the DVD drive is dead. Have you tried to play any CDs?
I recently had to replace a dead DVDRW in one of my laptops.

If you recently updated the kernel to 4.13.0.38, then I would go back to kernel 4.13.0.37 (or to the previous kernel where the DVD worked) just to see if the DVD drive works or if it's a kernel issue.

HI caraluna,

You say these DVD discs worked before, recently in Linux or Linux Mint?

Are the discs clean? Have you checked the lens or laser to make sure it is clean? Someone recently mentioned they used a CD/DVD cleaner disc and that worked for them.

how to clean a computer dvd player - Google Search

clean dvd discs with windex - Google Search
https://www.google.com/search?source=hp ... kQ3_icC3-I

Your laptop only has a DVD reader, not a burner writer, which should not matter to play DVD's (unless they are on rewriteable discs). But as was just suggested, it could be the DVD drive is going bad regardless whether it can play CD discs. The bios shows 2011 and it is now 2018.

You could get a USB external DVD burner writer and try that, they are relatively inexpensive and work great. Or, I'm sure they have laptop DVD burner writers available as a replacement as well.

Have you tried another multi-media player application like SMplayer, see post link from my last reply?

Good luck...

Keep us posted on your progress...

They worked fine a few years back (if memory serves me well) in a linux distribution I think it might've been Ubuntu. I did recently get an external dvd drive to try out but it's not working either. I can see the files when I look at the disc it just doesn't want to read them. I use VLC as my media player of choice it use to work for watching them for me but now it just doesn't work. I had used that thread before posting but didn't try to install the SMplayer this time I did and it's still having trouble. I even used the external dvd drive and got this log.

HI caraluna,

I did notice something. You may have to tell multimedia players in their settings or configuration that the device is for first optical drive "/dev/sr0", or for a second optical drive "/dev/sr1". "Kaffeine" is another good media player for this.

I do not see anything wrong with the results of the "inxi -Fxzd" console terminal command, so that is a good thing.

Good idea to use the terminal console to launch the media player to see the results :) .

Can you use your file manager to copy the video folder "VIDEO_TS" from the disc to your system and play those?

Assuming there is nothing wrong with the drive(s) ability to read the discs, you could rip the DVD disc using "K3b", "K9Copy", etc... into an iso file and play that using your media players. Or install "MakeMKV" to rip the DVD into digital files which is great for backing up your DVD's, and for playing on your system or for use on a multimedia streaming server.

Are these installed, if not install them:
libdvdcss2 – Simple foundation for reading DVDs – runtime libraries.
libdvdnav4 – DVD navigation library.
libdvdread4 – library for reading DVDs.
Mencoder

This looks like the second optical drive "/dev/sr1" was having trouble reading the disc.
libdvdnav: Can't read name block. Probably not a DVD-ROM device.
libdvdnav: vm: dvd_read_name failed
It also looks like the DVD has encryption (normal for movie videos) and that is not being decrypted properly. There is a way to update those.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install libdvd-pkg
libdvdnav: DVD disk reports itself with Region mask 0x00f60000. Regions: 1 4
libdvdnav: Suspected RCE Region Protection!!!

I think I might have figured out the problem. I tried the makemkv as you suggested and as I was trying to get it to work it kept saying "ILLEGAL REQUEST:MEDIA REGION CODE IS MISMATCHED TO LOGICAL UNIT REGION' occurred while reading '/VIDEO_TS/VTS_03_1.VOB' at offset '4096'" So it seems it could be the region code. How do I go about seeing if that's the issue?

Hi caraluna,

There is a program called "regionset" in the "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)", but be careful you can only "set" the region code so many times before it hard codes permanently the region. You can read it many times. for help type in "regionset --help", or "man regionset".

re-read my last reply as I updated it...

Did you recently relocate to a different country, are the discs from different countries, or was the external player purchased from outside your country?

FYI: If these are Blue-Ray discs, they will not work in a regular DVD player, unless it is a combo Blue-Ray/DVD disc

I didn't recently relocate. In the past, I had taken out the dvd drive to install a second hard drive in there but other than that nothing has changed apart from putting the drive back in. Also, they are not blurays as I haven't upgraded to those yet. The idea was to digitize them if possible in case something happens to the discs.

Hi caraluna,

Please re-read my last replies, and post the resulting regions for the 2 DVD players. Where are you located, generally speaking, what country?

Check the DVD discs or package to see what regions they are for and compare it to the results of what regions the actual physical DVD drives are set at, and let us know... Some people have purchased DVD's online and DVD players and writers which came from a different "region" than where they are located, so the "region" has to be set using "regionset". But, as I stated before, you can only change the DVD drive's region code 3-4 times. So, if you only have a few DVD discs from outside your normal region, it would not be worth it to change the region code, better to get those DVD's from the correct region you are in.

If the external DVD drive does not work, either, then it's probably a Mint issue.
As stated above, clean the DVD disc and the DVD drive, as dust (especially in a smoking environment) will coat the laser lens and the drive will not function properly.
If that doesn't work, then I would update to a newer kernel to see if that fixes the issue.
Then, if still a no-go, I would do a fresh install of LM.
Last resort would be to purchase another DVD drive:
