You can use Chrome to watch Prime Video on Linux/UNIX operating systems (including Chrome OS).
Internet Connection
Standard Definition (SD) videos: 900 Kbits/sec
High Definition (HD) videos: 3.5 Mbits/sec
Note: Prime Video streaming is not supported through Virtual Private Network (VPN) or proxy connections. To watch Prime Video, you'll need to disable these services for your device or try switching to another available connection.

Web Browsers
Chrome (version 59 or newer)
Firefox (version 53 or newer)
Internet Explorer (version 11 or newer)
Microsoft Edge on Windows 10
Safari (version 10 or newer on Mac OS 10.12.1 or newer)
Opera (version 37 or newer)
Note: Firefox ESR is not supported at this time. Firefox ESR (Version 60) will be supported when it's available for the general public, which is approximately May 1, 2018.

Tip: To watch Prime Video on your computer, we recommend using a browser that supports our HTML5 video player. The HTML5 player is optimized to work with our service, and doesn't use separate browser plugins to play video content. It also supports video features like Auto Play, live streaming (for Prime Video Channels), and playback in full 1080p High Definition.

They don't mention supported Linux systems for HD specifically. You could try installing an extension in your web browser to spoof your browser identification string and make it appear as if it's running on Windows or OSX.

My pc specs are : Linux mint 18.3 cinnamon, 3.6.7 (kernel 4.13.0-41 generic).
intel core i5 2500k cpu @3.30Hz x 4
Mai memory 7.7 gig(8)
Hard drive 107.1 gig
nvidia 1c02 graphics card (nvidia gtx 1060 3 gig gpu)

This is all i have for you.....this is what amazon AND the hdcp requirements are:

You can only stream Prime Video content in HD through your computer's web browser if your computer and connected display screen meet HDCP requirements.

If your computer or connected display to not meet HDCP requirements, the video you're watching will play in Standard Definition, and you'll see an error message in the player window.

Note: Some Video Graphics Array (VGA) and Digital Visual Interface (DVI) connections and monitors don't support HDCP, which may prevent your computer from meeting HDCP requirements.

HI unionjak,

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" and "lsusb" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

When i used Amazon Prime before, I do not recall it having issues with using a VPN provider's servers that were located in the same country as your Amazon account?

Hi unionjak,

I do not see anything wrong with the results of the commands, except that your computer host name seems weird or maybe bad? video driver seems to be working well.

Seems like a really long host name and it can be easily changed. I think I read somewhere that it is a good idea to keep host names to 16 chars or less without unusual special characters or spaces, dashes and underlines are ok.

HI unionjak,

You are welcome...

I did not think changing your computer's host name would affect playing Amazon Prime videos in HD either, but it could affect other things.

Ok, now the only things I can think of regarding streaming Amazon Prime videos are:

- What monitor or monitors do you have connected to your desktop systems and how are they connected? Are they all capable of playing HD videos and video streams?
Note: Some Video Graphics Array (VGA) and Digital Visual Interfacce (DVI) connections and monitors don't support HDCP, which may prevent your computer from meeting HDCP requirements.

- Do any of your systems (2 desktops and tablet) work for viewing HD videos?

- What browsers are you using to view these in, or that you have tried, just Chrome and Firefox? Have you tried any of the extension add-ons to view in an external player, like for MPV, or VLC, or user defined (smplayer)? Opera browser has an option to open videos in its own window by default. The Slimjet browser works well with all Chrome extension add-ons and has many other great features.

- As I do not have or use Amazon Prime at the moment, I cannot test this (although I do think it is a great service). Are there any settings in your Prime account setup for streaming video? I never checked on this. I always used my Smart Blu-Ray DVD player for viewing Amazon.com's Prime Videos.
eligible Amazon Prime customers can now download movies to their mobile devices and watch them offline, eliminating the need for Wi-Fi. If you're eligible, you'll see a download option when browsing Prime Video shows and movies on a Kindle, Android or iOS device.

Just went on windows 10 and the nvidia controller software says both my monitor and card are HDCP compatible. There is no info box like that on the nvidia x server settings software for linux mint, which is a bit strange.....

HI unionjak,

Do you have the Nvidia settings icon in your system tray? There may also be other Nvidia control apps, applets, etc... in the "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)".

Hope this helps ...

TV SHOWS HD OPTION DISAPPERED

Using my full HD TV as a monitor. TV shows would play fine HD 1080p on my mint 17.3 but not the movies. There wasn't even a HD option in movies. So gave them a call on 20th that lasted for about half an hour.
During the call itself i noticed that the HD option from TV shows has also disappeared & not back yet.
Tried even in mint 19.1 but nothing. Best video quality is fixed at 1.17gb p/hr mileage.
But on my laptop running WINDOWS 10, HD option shows in both movs & TV shows. But mint 19.1 on this same laptop also doesnt show HD.

I don't know why tv shows were playing in 1080p before my call. And on asking the prime support that what did they mess up during that call, they say that it's fully automated process and it automatically shows HD quality option if the server is connected to the good internet connection.

not to beat an old drum to death, but run this speed test.
IMO, it is the ' MOST ACCURATE ' of them all....

yeah, it shows a slower speed than the other guys, but it does not use Flash, and it does use the browser, which is how we access the 'net usually.

https://www.google.com/search?client=fi ... speed+test

I just ran it now, and got this:
26.7 Mbps download .... which just happens to match my Data Plan at 35Mbps advertised.
2.69 Mbps upload
that is with Firefox on 2.4g WiFi, and this more closely approximates what I get when doing file downloads.

Now contrast that to what SpeedTest.net shows on my cellphone on 5g WiFi

64dn 6up.png

I have never had a file download at that speed, it is BS... fluff for the provider that wrote the software.

@unionjak - trying updating your kernel. HDCP support is implemented at the kernel level for the open source drivers and your is about 4 months out of support - which might be a flag that your hardware is not HDPC compliant. I don't know about the nvidia drivers but for intel graphics HDCP support wasn't even in the kernel until 4.17 and is still a WIP - https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page= ... nux-Driver

@AZgl1500 it's not speed issue at my side. Same 4g works HD properly on my Windows on my laptop.

It's linux & Amazon issue quite surely.

Right now, I don't need HD much for movies but just for TV SHOWS which for some unknown reasons has suddenly stopped appearing.

In case anyone is following this still, Amazon specifically states that only SD is available on Linux:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer ... =201422810.

It seems this is a policy by Amazon and is quite new:
https://www.amazonforum.com/forums/digi ... er-plan-on.

So unless someone can find some way to make a Linux browser really look like a Windows browser (or browser for Mac, iOS, or a few Android systems) then it'll be SD on Linux until Amazon changes the policy. A list of the (currently) supported hardware can be found here:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer ... =201460880.

Some attempts at pretending to be a Windows browser are mentioned at:
https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxquestions ... ime_video/.
