This is strange. In your output we see:

Code: Select all

ports:
analog-output-speaker: Speakers (priority 10000, latency offset 0 usec, available: unknown)
			properties:
				device.icon_name = "audio-speakers"
analog-output-headphones: Headphones (priority 9000, latency offset 0 usec, available: no)
			properties:
				device.icon_name = "audio-headphones"
	active port: <analog-output-speaker>
I don't know why it's showing available: unknown for the active port. I had hoped stopping it from suspending would've fixed that.

Let's see the output of inxi -Fxz while I try to come up with other ideas.

Hi govind_rm. Right now I'm at a loss. I'll continue trying to think of something to try, but can't be certain anything will come to mind.

My only suggestion right now is to go back to alsamixer, and after selecting your sound card, use the right arrow to highlight Auto-Mute, then use the up or down arrow to change it to Disabled. I doubt it's going to help but it's worth a shot.

EDIT: One more thing to try: killall speech-dispatcher then test sound.

I did not see it mentioned, are you using a television as a monitor? using HDMI on a graphics card other than your Built-IN?

Had this issue , took me a while to get sound to work through the add- on Graphics card. turned off the built-in and now it works through the HDMI and headphones

Does it work when you boot with usb?
If yes, then note the kernel version using

Code: Select all

uname -r
Also in the Volume icon in right hand down corner click volume--sound settings--test sound. Do you see sounds as per your physical config? I have 2 speakers and I see 6 speakers including woofers etc which are non existent. IN that case you have to try your luck by using a different kernel. Kernel 4.15.x will be a good start. Install, reboot and test.

i will try a new kernel as you suggested.

Please use different kernel versions. Also check that something as simple as turning up the volume to the maximum is done.

Also try the 4.4.x kernel. Note that it's LTS, supported until April 2021. Just thinking that a Lenovo G560 is 5+ years old, and perhaps a more mature kernel branch might do better than a newer one.

i am currently using 4.15.0-22, but i have tried latest version from 4.4.x,4.8.x,4.10.x,4.11.x. (i was initially using 4.13.0-43)
some version has improved duration for like 10 minutes, but eventually sound disappears. i was hoping that 4.4.x series might bring some luck,(as Mr JoeFootball suggested)but it didnt do any good.
i was wondering if there is any other reason for disappearance of sound, and found some threads on saying that it might be related to sound card going into power saver mode(since i use my laptop plugged in), follwed few steps on like changing values on few items, but it too have proved useless.

thank you for reply.

If I'm reading your original post correctly, sound worked on your initial installation of LM 18.3, but subsequently disappeared, presumably via a disagreeable update.

But I'm curious to find out if sound works with a "live session" of LM 18.3 (where you boot from a DVD/USB). It should, as the "live session" would be representative of your initial installation (in theory). If not, then that could rule out the update issue.

tired it, but the problem is still there. In pavu control sound bar is working but its written silent. Any other ideas?

thank you for your suggestion
You say you took the advise and rebooted the installation. At that time did the sound work? You did reboot not just restart, right? You must have added pavu control after the reboot. This is kinda like what joeFootball is asking, I think (that is sure vague). :)

no MrJoe, this wasn't a problem that came after an update (if that is what you mean). As suggested i did try booting from usb but same conditions persist during booting from usb as well (initially, ie when the system is turned on and desktop appears, sound is there but after few minutes sound disappears, i checked by using test speakers option in sound settings after few minutes while i booted from usb). Just in case if my problem isn't clear, this is what i am facing. i installed linux mint (not dual boot, erase disk and install linux option), but soon found out that sound disappears after few minutes from SPEAKERS, but headphones work fine (thank the gods :D ) i went through suggestions like force starting alsa, installing pavu control etc. i tried kernel versions (4.4x as well since this is an old model laptop). but other than changing the duration( 10 minutes max) for which speakers work, problem was still there. i thought it might be audio card going to power saver mode (found something on net to change a value to 0 on /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/intel-audio-powersave) but it too didn't give desired results.( plugged in or not sound works for few minutes then goes off) . but there tabs showing sound playing in pavu control, sound settings shows audio playing but there is no sound from speakers as i posted on previous replies. Forgive me if i haven't made my problem clear earlier.

thanks.

I still think you should take joeFootballs suggestion and give the results in the live session.

One other thing I thought of is to use a USB sound adapter. They are cheap and will restore sound in a failed system. It is an external sound card. Here is a link if you are interested. Even if your systems sound card is not failed, this is nice to have around for troubleshooting and cost just $7-$9 US.

i am sorry, but i am a little confused. you were asking if sound works during booting from usb, right? if so i have tested speakers using sound settings. but they give out no sound( front right and front left) even at max volume. but start up sound is heard. other than that nothing. this is when i boot from usb.

if i start normally, sound is there for few minutes in speakers, then vanishes. but during all the time ,normal or live boot sound is ok with headphones.
hope this clears doubts.
if you still need some other info using codes during live session kindly tell me which all info and which all code i need to use.

thank you for your responses.

Hi govind_rm.

Let's see if this helps: In the terminal, type sudo modprobe snd_hda_intel power_save=0, then run alsamixer, select your sound card and make sure Line is NOT muted (I know we're trying to get speakers working.) Now play something with sound. Did this work?

Sorry govind_rm, it appears you don't have that option. No idea ATM how to proceed.
