hai, i am new to linux and i have installed linux mint 18.3 os on my laptop. problem is that there is sound from speakers. initially there was sound for some time which disappered later on. headphones seems to work fine. i have tired installing pavu control, viewed alsamixer, since few people seemed to have same problem. but none seems to work.
i have a kernal version 4.13.0-41 (if that provides any help). if i play an audio or video sound bar in pavu control show those sounds but no sound comes out of speaker. i have tried different configurations in it as well, only to have same results.
i am attaching few screenshots if it provides any information

hoping to get a solution soon,

Try muting and un-muting on pavucontrol - it's the speaker icon.

When I was using pulseaudio, I'd mute the audio(amixer sset Master,0 toggle $ mute) but it wouldn't un-mute unless I did it through pavucontrol, although that 'toggle' method would work with just ALSA.
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!
Your data and OS are backed up....right?

i tried muting and unmuting through pavu control but sadly it doesnt work. it is same as usual, sound works for few minutes when i turn on then disappears. Any other suggestions?

Hi govind_rm, and welcome to the forum.

Try deleting everything in ~/.config/pulse/ then reboot and test your sound.

tired it, but the problem is still there. In pavu control sound bar is working but its written silent. Any other ideas?

Hi govind_rm. I know this will sound silly, but have you checked if there's a knob on one of your speakers and made sure it is turned on? That knob (if you have one) does not affect the volume controls on the OS, so it could look like it's playing, but you hear nothing.

All right, try this. In the terminal, type: sudo alsa force-reload and see if that gets sound working.

Okay, next lets get some info. Paste back the info returned from the following 4 commands:

I'm taking a bit of a guess here, but let's try this (it's easy to revert if necessary.)

Type gksudo xed /etc/pulse/default.pa (substitute xed with your preferred text editor.)

About 3/4 of the way down, find this section:

Comment out the second line so it looks like this:

Save the file, then back in the terminal type killall pulseaudio followed by pulseaudio --start

pardon my ignorance, but
gksudo xed /etc/pluse/default.pa
is this code supposed to bring a list of commands, right? because when i executed this command the following popped up(please see the attachment) . but there was nothing to edit. Am i missing something??

Hmm. That was supposed to bring up a file, that should NOT be empty.

To test if it's really empty, type this: cat /etc/pulse/default.pa That should immediately fill the terminal window with a few pages of text. Did it?

The spelling is pulse and not pluse as done by you. Better to copy paste

I don't know why the gksudo didn't work correctly. Let's try it this way. In your File Manager, browse to /etc/pulse then right click an empty space in the window and see if Open as Root is an option. If so, choose that, then right click on default.pa and choose Open with Text Editor. Now you should be able to change the file as I posted earlier.

MrEen, i have done as you suggested edited the file posted earlier. unfortunately still there is no change.
