Can't Install Spotify Plugin for Clementine

Post by lavine43 »

Hi Folks,

I am new to Linux Mint (or any distro for that matter). I have installed Clementine as my music player, and I have tried to install the Spotify plugin, but it fails. The message I get is "Error downloading Spotify plugin. Invalid signature: blob". I have no clue as to what this means or to how to fix it. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff Lavine

I found things on the Clementine and Gentoo user forums that indicate that this works in Clementine 1.3.1. So first check your version of Clementine ... copy/paste this to the terminal:

Code: Select all

apt-cache policy clementine
And if it's older than 1.3.1, uninstall Clementine and copy/paste this to the terminal to install a newer version (I don't use ppas much or like them but this is from the official site (https://launchpad.net/~me-davidsansome/ ... clementine):

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:me-davidsansome/clementine
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install clementine
Your user settings for app software are stored as hidden files in /home so if you don't delete the clementine ones you should still have all your user preferences for clementine intact.

Hi lavine43

Welcome to the wonderful world of Linux Mint and its excellent forum!

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

I always install the PPA for Clementine to get their newest version and to keep it updated. When I clicked on Internet and then Spotify, it automatically downloaded their plugin, then I right-clicked Spotify to configure the Spotify Login username and password which also has a download option. Unfortunately, you have to have a Premium Spotify account to use this plugin with Spotify in Clementine, in other words, my free Spotify account would not work.

I know there is at least one Spotify Client for Linux desktop (spotify-client) as well check the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM), and other music apps can also use Spotify. The Spotify client for Linux does work with my free Spotify account.

Hi lavine43,

FYI: Other music apps that work with Spotify

- "Harmony" works with various services including Spotify free and paid for Premium. Not sure if this is a free app?

Download Harmony - Linux AppImage or deb file
https://getharmony.xyz/download

- "Tomahawk" (excellent music app) - works with Premium Spotify only. Can share what you and your friends are listening too.

TOMAHAWK - in the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM) and elsewhere.

Hope this helps ...
