Unable able to create .asoundrc

I'm trying to follow the directions here (link), so I can get all my 5 speakers to work through the Opctical SPDIF cable, instead of just 2.

I entered the following into the terminal

vi /home/myUsername/.asoundrc

Press enter, then in that same terminal window, I try to paste the following:

pcm.!default {
	type hw
	card 0
}

ctl.!default {
	type hw           
	card 0
}

As soon as I click paste, text on red background reads:

Code: Select all

E353: Nothing in register

I went to the directory: /home/myUsername/

And there is no file name .asoundrc

just create a blank text name it .asoundrc and then paste
