...open a terminal & type inxi -Fxz. Then copy / paste the results here, so that people know what kind of hardware & configuration they're dealing with...

...i'm afraid this is gonna be a pita. It appears there's a known bug with that model. Check here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1563110
And the temporary workaround...
https://github.com/Grippentech/Asus-E20 ... all-Script

Upstream, i read that supposedly Canonical has got it working with 18.04...
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=115531

So either i'd try Grippentech's workaround above...or, probably easier, i'd try Mint 19 Beta (and / or Ubuntu 18.04).

...Did some further digging, stumbled upon this:
https://github.com/heikomat/linux/blob/ ... /README.md
He provides a very clear & up-to-date guide, along with his own pre-built kernel that includes the patches in question.
Note that both his solution & Grippentech older one above, even if you trust them, are obviously totally unsupported...

Ie. i'll emphasize again that you would certainly be way better trying out either Mint 19 or Ubuntu 18 in Live Mode,
and see if sound is working under such.
The only other option would be to use an external sound card (which doesn't really thrill me as an idea)...
