HDMI sound not working 18.3 cinnamon

Post by metmike07 »

I've looked through many threads on here (and elsewhere), nothing seems to work for me. The odd part about it is that I can see the playback levels moving in pavucontrol, but no sound at all. Also, I can't seem to select my sound card in alsamixer. The onboard sound levels display automatically, but when I switch to the Nvidia option I only get 4 s/pdif options, unmovable from 00. Any thoughts?

Re: HDMI sound not working 18.3 cinnamon

Hi metmike07, and welcome to the forum.

I've not yet had any experience with HDMI sound, but I'll try to help as much as I can.

In pavucontrol's Configuration tab and Output Devices tab does everything look correct to you?

I noticed you have funky volume settings for the device (volume: front-left: 1703 / 3% / -95.12 dB, front-right: 65530 / 100% / -0.00 dB, rear-left: 1703 / 3% / -95.12 dB, rear-right: 65530 / 100% / -0.00 dB, front-center: 65530 / 100% / -0.00 dB, lfe: 65536 / 100% / 0.00 dB balance 0.97) which to me implies you did find a way to alter volume settings. What options are present when you press F6 in alsamixer? I'm pretty sure you want to select card #1 in there. If you see all the options after that, use the arrow keys to move to front left then keep hitting the q key to bring it's volume up to 100%, then do the same for rear left.

Good luck and keep us posted.

EDIT: Oops, q key is for left and right on one channel. So it applies if both fronts are one channel and both rears are one channel, otherwise use the up arrow.

Every time I bring alsamixer up it defaults to onboard sound. When I hit f6 and choose the Nvidia HDA I get this:

Sorry. I'm out of my depth on this one. One thing that might be worth trying, assuming it's safe to do so, is unplugging the cord and plugging it back in.

One thing that might help others help you is knowing exactly what your setup is. What cord is going where? Is the receiving end capable of 5.1 sound? Have you tried other Digital Stereo and Digital Surround options in the Configuration tab of pavucontrol?

Good luck.

My HDMI runs from the video card into my Denon receiver. That combination works fine on my Windows 10 boot. I'v e tried the other options/config for pavuconrol and the system sound settings, but nothing has fixed the problem. I do know the onboard sound works as I've tried headphones. Also, I've run sound tests from the command line with no errors, but still no sound.

EDIT: AHA! You might want to open the Driver Manager and see if there's a recommended nvidia driver available to install. If so, there might be more steps involved than just installing it and rebooting. Let me know if you want to try this.

Original post:

I just thought of something you might try. In the pavucontrol Configuration tab, turn the Analog profile off while testing HDMI sound. If you also have a Loopback profile, maybe turn that off as well, after trying just the Analog off. I don't know if this is going to make any difference, but didn't want to leave you hanging.

Also, I've posted this in 2 other threads already, I might as well add it here:
MrEen wrote: Fri Jun 22, 2018 5:01 pm Have you tried shutting the computer down completely (not reboot?)

Also, if this is a dual boot with Windows, and I know this will sound stupid, boot to Windows and make sure sound isn't muted there, then shut down completely, then power on and boot back into Mint. If still nothing, then reboot Mint.

Good luck.

I tried to compile nvhda to have hdmi sound ok, you can read this thread

I'm not sure if it will solve your issue but normally you won't break anything when you will try it :)

I was already using the recommended nvidia driver, however from a previous troubleshooting experience I also had more options:

I still haven't found a solution. I can hear audio through headphones just fine. I disabled the HD audio controller from the BIOS to make sure the card was being utilized, but I still see four 00 s/pdif channels from the card in alsamixer. Frustrating.

Yup, this is too advanced for me right now. I'm considering trying a previous version of mint, although searching tells me a fair amount of people have this problem, yet nothing has worked for me.
The other option is to buy a sound card, but I'd rather get this working.

Hi again metmike07. I think I might have spotted something in your original post. Go to the Configuration tab of pavucontrol and select Digital Surround 5.1 (HDMI), or if that's already selected, change it to Digital Surround 5.1 (HDMI 2) then test sound (you might have to make some switch on the Output Devices tab, not sure.)

I'm suspecting sound is playing to one, but you've selected the other.

At one point I switched HDMI ports on my video card. I also have tried different combinations of configurations in pavucontrol, so I don't think this is the culprit.

However, I now have a new problem. I tried a reinstall of 18.3, and when I install the driver for my nvidia card, LM won't boot past the intro screen. I have no idea what's different, I was using it before w/o issue. I know I need to start a new thread.

Turn monitor off then on :-O :-) (If routing the audio through the monitor.)
