No sound with Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 2nd generation and Linux Mint 9

Post by little ernest » Mon Jul 23, 2018 11:27 am

Hello. I have a recently installed Linux Mint 9 Xfce in my desktop computer. The system reproduces audio files through the internal audio interface (integrated in the CPU). But, when I connect my external USB audio interface Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 2nd generation, the system recognizes it, Focusrite appears in the Pavucontrol audio mixer but do not reproduces audio files.
I've noticed that in the Configuration tab of the Pavucontrol audio mixer,
Focusrite appears with Profile: analogical surround 7.1 out + multichannel in.
Internal audio interface appears with Profile: digital stereo out + analogical stereo in.
I have the computer connected to a pair of Dynaudio Bm5 monitors. It is a stereo audio system.
Maybe here is the cause of the problem. But I don't know how to change this configuration. The Pavucontrol mixer does not give me any stereo option.

So, please:

1. Am I doing something wrong?
2. Is there a problem between Linux Mint and the Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 2nd generation?

I have been looking in forums for answers to this problem and didn't find anything. Sorry if I did the wrong research.
Thank you very much.

Hello little ernest, and welcome to the forum. If you click on the Focusrite profile on the Confiruation tab of pavucontrol, there are probably other options than just analog surround 7.1 out + multichannel in and I would think multichannel in (all by itself) might be what you want. If that doesn't seem possible, start something with sound playing on your computer then type in the terminal pacmd list-sinks and paste the output back here.

Good luck.

Hello and thank you very much in deed, MrEen!

If I open the Pavucontrol mixer – configuration tab – Scarlett 18i8 2nd Gen, it gives me the following four options:

1. Analog surround 7.1 out + multichannel in
2. Analog surround 7.1 out
3. Multichannel in
4. Turn off

I am trying with “Multichannel in” while VLC reproduces a .mp3 file, but no sound comes from speakers nor headphones.
With this “Multichannel in” configuration, I write in the terminal “pacmd list-sinks” and it gives me:

host@user:~$ pacmd list-sinks

I’ve tried the same “pacmd list-sinks” command with Pavucontrol with the “Analog Surround 7.1 OUT + multichannel In” configuration and gave me a different output, much longer. If you think it can be helpfull I’ll copy it here.

Thanks again.

What I want you to try now is go back to the Configuration tab of pavucontrol. You have the Focusrite profile set to mutichannel in, and a different profile set as digital stereo out + analogical stereo in. Change that second one to analog stereo duplex (if available) or something that includes analog stereo out. It is possible this will actually be under a third profile. Right now, your sound is trying to play to a LG ULTRAWIDE connected via HDMI. The changes I've given should get it back to playing through the system.

Good luck.

In the configuration tab of pavucontrol, I've changed the internal audio profile to analog stereo duplex (it was the first option in the list).
Now, "pacmd list-sinks" gives me:

1 sink(s) available.

Okay, two things to try here. First, the headphone sound is at 45%. The Output Devices tab will have a volume slider underneath "Headphones (plugged in)" Slide it to the right to increase the volume. You can test with aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

If that doesn't work, try a purge and reinstall of sound stuff with these one line at a time:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa-base pulseaudio
sudo apt-get install alsa-base pulseaudio
sudo alsa force-reload
Good luck.

Thank you for your help, MrEen. I'm afraid I didn't express clearly my problem. My system reproduces audio files through the internal card which is incorporated to the CPU. The problem I have is that I cannot reproduce audio files trough the external USB Focusrite audio interface.

I could be wrong, but isn't the Focusrite for getting sound (guitar, microphone, etc) INTO the computer. I assumed the headphone jack on the Focusrite is just for hearing what you're playing while the computer records. If this is the case, and it's getting the computer to record what you're playing/singing that is the issue, I apologize for not interpreting this properly. Let me know.
