[SOLVED] No Sound Since Last Kernel Update

Post by MDPenguin »

I can't get sound to work since my last kernel update to 4.4.0-131. If I look at Sound settings, it shows "Dummy Output" under the device list. Anyone have any ideas for getting this working?

Things I've tried so far:
  • Killed and restarted pulse
  • Cleared pulse config files and restarted
  • Reloaded alsa
  • Reinstalled pulse and alsa
  • Rolled back kernel
  • Reinstalled kernel
  • Added options snd-hda-intel model=auto to alsa-base.conf based on this viewtopic.php?f=48&t=265908&sid=de3f35c ... 30ea8b2149
Here's some info:

Anyone have any ideas for getting this working?
Suggestion only . .

Reboot and hold down the Shift key during boot-up to get to the Grub menu, choose "previous kernel", then choose your last kernel that audio worked for you.
Once you have booted to that older kernel and you have tested to see that everything works, use the Update Manager > View > Kernels, and remove the kernel that doesn't work. :-)

From another user:
$ dmesg | grep snd
[ 12.316432] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1f.3: bound 0000:00:02.0 (ops i915_audio_component_bind_ops [i915_bpo])
[ 12.523999] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1f.3: CORB reset timeout#1, CORBRP = 0
[ 12.525698] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1f.3: no codecs found!
The fix was some broken packages or some such
He found that the culprit(s) were some programs that had not updated properly and some things that were being uninstalled too
Maybe apt check in the terminal, and/or Fix Broken Packages in Synaptic Package Manager might help here?

EDIT: Oops, missed one thing. Welcome to the forum, MDPenguin! :)

Thank you for the advice and the welcome. Sadly, no luck with apt-check/fix broken packages: nothing was found.

From the other thread you referred to, this might help:
MrEen wrote: Sun Mar 18, 2018 12:14 am Some searching suggests trying this:

EDIT TO ADD: sudo touch /etc/modprobe.d/intel.conf
gksudo xed /etc/modprobe.d/intel.conf (replace xed with your text editor)

Add these 2 lines:

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel single_cmd=1
options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1
Save the file and reboot.

Good luck.
If that doesn't work, I'd seriously consider upgrading your kernel to the latest in the 4.15 series via Update Manager > View > Linux kernels.

Re: No Sound Since Last Kernel Update

I left that off the list, but I did give that a try last night and it didn't help. I'll probably try updating the kernel sometime this weekend or possibly upgrading to Mint 18.3. I haven't tried it yet just because rolling the kernel back and removing 4.4.0-131 didn't help. I'll post the results once I can do it.

Edit: Oh, and thanks!

Another thing you may not have tried is a complete shutdown of the computer. It may help.

I think your computer is new enough to warrant the 4.15 kernel.

Let us know how it goes.

Re: No Sound Since Last Kernel Update

I found a bug report for 4.4.0-131 regarding sound issues (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1782125) so I did take your advice and updated to 4.15. It didn't help, though. To check to see if it was hardware related, I loaded MINT 18.1 from a live CD and it didn't have sound, either. As a last ditch effort, I flashed my BIOS with an update that was a few months newer than the one I was running and now I have sound again. I'm guessing it was just a fluke that I lost sound around the same time as my last Kernel update. I'm glad it's working again but I'm not terribly happy that flashing the BIOS was necessary: I hope it doesn't suggest a more serious problem.

Thanks to everyone who offered advice! I really appreciate the help.

EDIT: Interestingly, the sound test in Sound Settings doesn't seem to work even though all other applications do.

Glad you're fixed and sorry it remains a bit of a mystery.

Regarding the test sound. Look at the Playback tab of pavucontrol to see if System Sounds are muted or the volume is too low.

I did try that but it didn't help. I'm honestly not that worried about it, though, since I don't really leave my speakers on unless I'm listening to music or watching a video so I don't make get much use out of the system sounds.

Ahh. I think I know what happened. I'll bet when you upgraded your kernel, it autoremoved some files (who knows why) and that messed up your sound. I'll bet if you type apt install libcanberra-pulse you'll have the system sounds working again.

If you check /var/log/apt/history.log you might find what else it did although it's a bit hard to read.

You were dead on about libcanberra-pulse; I checked and it wasn't installed and system sounds are working now that it is.

The apt history doesn't show anything between the last thing I did before flashing the BIOS, which was install kernel 4.15, and when I started purging some of the oldest kernels after I had sound again (see below). And because the OS run from the live disc didn't see the sound card, I suspect that it really was something between the hardware and the kernel that was causing the issue. That said, if you have any more ideas I'll be happy to look into them: I'd love to know for sure what happened.

No more ideas I'm afraid. Sometimes, the card just needs a little vacation it seems. I've had a number of threads I've tried to help in where one morning it just started working again when nothing new had been tried for a few days.

Great to learn that a 4 year old piece of advice resolves an issue on a much newer LMDE release still.
Nonetheless, this thread had already been marked [solved] 4 years ago.
Closing it in 2022 at last.
