SOLVED: Mint 19 Xfce + Panasonic CF-30

Post by dl_sledding »

Fresh install of Mint 19 Xfce on a CF-30, no sound. Tried everything that I've found on the net so far, with no joy. No matter what I do, pavucontrol only knows about the "dummy" device. I'm on the .29 kernel. Have performed apt check and synaptic-fix broken packages. alsamixer only shows four devices: master, PCM, Line Out, and Mic Boost. Nothing about speakers or headphones. I've added the following to the modprobe.d files:

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel model=laptop
options snd-hda-intel single_cmd=1
options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1
This has not helped. Here is the output of other commands that were asked for in other posts.

Output of inxi -A:

Code: Select all

Audio: Card Intel NM10/ICH7 Family High Definition Audio Controller driver: snd_hda_intel

Hi dl_sledding.

First, you did a great job trying to get yourself fixed, and get the info we need to try to help. Thanks for that! For my own knowledge, what happens when you try aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav?

Now, my first suggestion is to make a couple changes to alsa-base.conf (I assume that's what you meant by "modprobe.d files".)
First, remove the last 2 lines. Then alter the other one to options snd-hda-intel model=panasonic. Reboot and test.

If everything remains the same, try options snd-hda-intel model=ref

If still not working, try options snd-hda-intel model=auto (this is supposed to be the default, but I've seen 2 people fixed by it.)

Hopefully, one of those gets rid of that Dummy output for you. Then it might need just some minor tweaks to work correctly (such as unmuting everything necessary.)

Good luck.

Code: Select all

aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
No sound heard...

I have tried all your suggestions. The only one that made a difference was:

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel model=ref
This gave me a bunch more options in alsamixer (master, bass speaker, pcm, front, s/pdif, s/pdif default pcm, auto-mute, rear mic). Nothing about headphones or speaker, other than that "bass speaker". Still no audio when playing Front_Center.wav.

I forgot to say, that the pavucontrol still shows only the dummy device...

Well, good and bad. Good that I now realize this is an old (and 32 bit) laptop. Bad that one of the solutions I found will not work in your case. Although, I do have a few ideas to try.

Does the output of sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/* have all lines (might be just a single line) end with pulseaudio?

It's worth trying options snd-hda-intel single_cmd=1 by itself at the bottom of alsa-base.conf. (Remove the model=ref line) Follow with reboot.

You may have already tried a full shutdown instead of a reboot. Sometimes this helps.

If none of that helped at all, try a purge/reinstall of sound stuff with the following one line at a time:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa-base pulseaudio
sudo apt-get install alsa-base pulseaudio
sudo alsa force-reload
One unlikely option is to look in your BIOS to see if the sound card can be disabled/re-enabled

I'll keep trying to come up with possible solutions until I hear back.

Good luck.

P.S. I have a suspicion you're going to have some boots with working sound and many more (5X or more) with no sound. Hopefully we find the proper fix.

I appreciate all the help!! Thank you!

No. A single line:

Code: Select all

                     USER PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0c: svxlink 808 F...m svxlink
It's worth trying options snd-hda-intel single_cmd=1 by itself at the bottom of alsa-base.conf. (Remove the model=ref line) Follow with reboot.
Worse. Now alsamixer shows the default of four items.
You may have already tried a full shutdown instead of a reboot. Sometimes this helps.
Nope, no difference.
If none of that helped at all, try a purge/reinstall of sound stuff with the following one line at a time:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa-base pulseaudio
sudo apt-get install alsa-base pulseaudio
sudo alsa force-reload
Also didn't help.
One unlikely option is to look in your BIOS to see if the sound card can be disabled/re-enabled
Nothing in bios.
I'll keep trying to come up with possible solutions until I hear back.
Again, THANK YOU for the help. Sorry I'm such a pain!

Ok. This is probably the culprit:
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0c: svxlink 808 F...m svxlink
It appears svxlink is for ham radio use. I can only suggest killall svxlink followed by sudo alsa force-reload and finish with pulseaudio -D.

Does aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav produce sound now?

We have plenty of ham radio operators on the forum, so we should be able to get help getting that set up if needed.

Actually, that's exactly what I am setting this up for. I just got an SDR dongle from RTL-SDR.com, and am trying to get it working on this laptop. I also want to use this for controlling my TS-440, and using the dongle as a panadapter for the Kenwood. And I figure the Toughbook is a great unit for field operations...

It looks like svxlink is software for repeater control / echolink-like control. I'll try unloading the svxlink software and doing the other steps you recommend.

I'll report back around lunch time...

My "real job" is a sysadmin. I run linux servers (and absolutely loathe M$), but spend very little time working *on* the gui, even though my workstation is a Mint station. I can troubleshoot the hell out of the cli (bind, dhcpd, wireshark, and cli tools are my forte'), but I always have struggled with X issues. I don't personally know anyone who is an X guru, so I don't have anyone to learn from. And things in there are cryptic and disconnected; I can't even get the touch screen calibrated properly, because (for whatever reason) the system seems to ignore the config file created from the output of xinput_calibrator. But that's for another time! :)

Again, thanks for the help!

Yep! It was the culprit!

I uninstalled svxlink and ran the alsa and pulseaudio commands, and now sound works.

And I have sound from the SDR.

Everything is now good (except for the touchscreen, which just annoys me....)

Thanks so much for all the help. I truly appreciate it!
