[SOLVED] Hdmi problem

Hello,

I have a problem with the hdmi sound. On the TV i get the image but without sound. Also i don't see the HDMI on Sounds Setting -> Outputs.

Hi grivusag.

Install and run PulseAudio Volume Control (pavucontrol.) Go to the Configuration tab and select HDMI then the same on the Output Devices tab.

If you have any issues after that, report back here.

Hello MrEen,

I have install pavucontrol but i don't see the HDMI option.
I have only those options: Analog Stereo Duplex, Analog Stereo Output, Analog Stereo Input, Off.

And to Output Devices tab i have just: Speakers, Headphones (unplugged).

Ahhh. So it's not detecting the card properly.

Please paste back the results of inxi -Fxz and aplay -l and enclose the results in-between [ⅽode] and [/ⅽode] code markers by selecting </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply.

The HDMI audio option was missing also on one of my machines. I fixed it using these steps:

• Close the PulseAudio settings.
• Connect your TV or external monitor through HDMI.
• In a Terminal issue the command pulseaudio -k
  - this kills the running daemon.
• Open Sound Settings again. The HDMI option should now be present.

Now, HDMI should automatically be detected when you plug in the cable.

Let's see if this helps get the HDMI recognized. In the terminal type xed admin:///etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and scroll to the bottom of the file and add this new line:

Sorry, thought you were using 19 for some reason. Use gksudo xed /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf instead.

Hi grivusag.

For some reason your system isn't detecting the HDMI and I have 2 options I want you to possibly check.

1. Although it doesn't appear to me that you are using Windows on that laptop, in case you are, boot to Windows and make certain fast boot is off. While there, also test the HDMI output if you can to make sure it works at all over there. When done, do a full shutdown and wait a moment before you power up the laptop.

2. If no Windows at all, do a full shutdown and wait a moment before you power up the laptop and go into your BIOS to see if anything sound related is disabled there (or even HDMI related.) Then boot into Mint.

After those, I'm hoping aplay -l will have a new item added that has HDMI option(s). If so, HDMI should now show up on the Configuration tab of pavucontrol.

I have only Linux Mint 18. The notebook was shut down over 8 hours. I attached the pictures from the bios.
I only get TV signal, but no audio.

Hi grivusag.

I'm struggling to come up with more ideas to try. I doubt this will help, but it will not hurt. Delete the files in ~/.config/pulse/ then in the terminal type pulseaudio -k and wait several seconds before trying your sound.

In the BIOS, on the Security tab, is Secure boot disabled? Anything there that might be blocking?

In the Driver Manager, is there anything different recommended for the nvidia card? Right now you're running NVIDIA 384.130. If that's the one that says recommended, I'd stick with it.

If you boot to an older kernel (pre 4.15) does everything work?

If none of those help, my last suggestion is to try the directions here to upgrade alsa. When it sends you to get a deb file, get the one for Bionic as long as you're still using the 4.15 kernel.

That is very possible, yes.

I know one user that we tried for ages for whom 19 did not help get his sound working. But I had another that was fixed very recently by going to 19. I believe it's worth a shot.
