Did you log out/in or reboot after installing kmix? (Sadly, I'm guessing you did.)

Yea I've been rebooting each time
Pressing F7, F8 and F9 (Mute, Volume up, Volume down) in the command prompt types "~"

Just in case, give this a shot: apt install --reinstall kmix

(I'm wondering if you still had it so it didn't do anything without the --reinstall.)

Sorry RedCMD. The only things I can think of at this point are to try a kernel upgrade (doubtful it helps) or reinstall Mint (at least should get you back to where you were.)
