Solved. Sound Achieved. No Sound on Dell 15z Ultrabook in LM 19.

Post by Resistor »

See my post further down...

Sound has always been a problem on this Dell 15z Ultrabook, but between kernel shopping and the addition of an option in

Code: Select all

alsa-base.conf
, sound works fine in LM 17.3.

Not so in LM 19.
The headphones - earbuds, work fine. but not the speakers.

chris-LEJ solved the sound problem in LM 18.3, here:
viewtopic.php?f =48&t=265908&hilit=dumm ... 0#p1499893

I'm in LM 19 Cinnamon, with a similar sound card...
Intel 7 Series/C210 Audio, vs his
Intel 7 Series/C216 Chipset.

I've tried almost everything anyone has ever suggested, to no avail.
It seems I can not properly follow instructions to achieve the same result.

Am I missing something, and so failing to properly implement this solution?

Here is chris-LEJ 's solution:
had a similar problem with Linux Mint19 ... for me it helped to upgrade kernel to version 4.15.0-29-generic which made the system see the card but still no sound.

Used then

Code: Select all

alsactl -nrestore
, this command re-graps tyhe card and initializes it. Then created a file (called it alsafix)

Code: Select all

echo alsactl nrestore >alsafix
Then

Code: Select all

chmod +x alsafix&&cp alsafix /sbin
then added a startup entry via GUI

Code: Select all

"./alsafix"
and it works.

Hardware: Audio device: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04)

Card: HDA Intel PCH │ Chip: Realtek ALC269VC

(in my case a Panasonic Toughbook CF-C2)

hope that can help others to fix the IntelHDA/realtek no sound dummy output issue on linux mint 19.

Hi Resistor.

That other fix you linked to was for "Dummy Output" which may not be the problem with your system.

Please paste back the output of inxi -Fxz and aplay -l

Also, start a song or video then get the output of pacmd list-sinks as well (without using headphones, please.)

Hello MrEen.

I had the "Dummy Output" a few days ago. The speakers returned after I arbitrarily installed some sound related files from Synaptic Package Manager. Still no sound.

Okay. You're WAYYY out on the ledge there running that kernel. I don't know if going back to the supported 4.15 kernels will help or not.

First thing to try is delete the files in ~/.config/pulse/ then issue pulseaudio -k in the terminal and wait a moment before testing.

Do you know, or can find out what option you added to alsa-base.conf? My next suggestion would have been trying that, but it'd be a bit of a crap shoot with your 92HD91BXX Analog. That exact number isn't in the list I consult for alsa-base.conf options.

I found your old thread.

Looks like you used either options snd-hda-intel-model index=0 or options snd-hda-intel model=generic.

Have you tried both?

Kernel shopping was the way I found to get sound on this computer, 5 years ago. I don't regard LM 19 as an operation system because of the lack of sound, and also a couple of other issues.

I've been following your posts with other people with sound problems and I think I have tried most of the things you've recommended over the past few months.

I deleted the files in

Code: Select all

~/.config/pulse/
Those files were then regenerated.

I also executed

Code: Select all

pulseaudio -k
in terminal.

Still no sound.

I'll post the content of the

Code: Select all

options
section of the file... It is a mess.

I just did an apt update and will reboot, to see what happens.
Back in a bit.

I just rebooted to 4.17.0-041700-generic.
Still took 2 or 3 minutes to boot.
Still no sound.

I'm about out of time for today and tomorrow. May be back Wednesday.

This is the pertinent part of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:
I tried a number of line items you found some time back, but none worked and I removed them...

As your exact codec isn't officially supported, all I can do is give you the link to the file I use when making these suggestions.

If you look at line #456 here you'll see the dell-s14. That shows you how to use the file.

Right now, you still have model=auto active which you'll need to comment out or delete when trying other things. My first suggestion would be dell-m6-amic from a little higher up in that file.

I'd try anything with dell that is under ANY of the STAC sections (dell-m42, dell-m43, etc.) until you find something that works with your setup.

Sorry I can't be of better help. I'll keep trying to think of something different to try.

I didn't notice during my copy/paste that this was wrong: options snd-hda-intel-model index=0, which should have read on the site options snd-hda-intel index=0, but I doubt that's going to help you (altho...)

I just realized your aplay doesn't show HDMI. I found some 15z models that do indeed appear to not come with it, but if your model does then that's another thing going wrong here.

Here's what I want you to try. Here we're going to upgrade to the latest alsa driver.

I'm pretty sure you're going to need to boot into a 4.15 kernel for this to work.

Just in case, apt install dkms (you probably already have it) then download this file then back in the terminal cd Downloads followed by sudo dpkg -i oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms_0.201808050301~ubuntu18.04.1_all.deb then reboot back into the 4.15 kernel.

Cross your fingers and test your sound.

Good luck.

I've tried a few of those options before, to no avail.
As a last ditch effort, I'll try these 2:

Code: Select all

options snd_hda_intel=dell-m6-amic
options snd_hda_intel=dell-s14
I skipped Linux Mint 18 for lack of sound.

Unless something changes, it looks as if I'll be skipping Linux Mint 19, as well.
That something could be a new laptop or I discover a new kernel that supports this one. Another option would be another distro, though I'm not excited about the learning curve for another distro.

Thank you, MrEen.
I would not have known about a lot of those option and commands, were it not for you. That is not to ignore others, as I have had a lot of help along the way.

Hi Resistor.

I'm truly sorry you're having this much trouble getting your machine to behave the way you expect it should. From my research, I think this has to do with (almost) all manufacturers developing/building for the Windows environment (It must work on Windows!) That leaves linux people trying to reverse engineer or otherwise hack stuff to make it work outside of Windows. That list I sent (dell-s14, etc) only somewhat recently added the STAC92HD95 section, after ending at STAC92HD83* previously, which skips over your 92HD91BXX.

I do believe it's worth trying that suggestion that requires using the 4.15 kernel. If it works, you should be able to upgrade the kernel afterwards and it will continue recompiling into the newer kernels. It's just a build directive that requires it originally use the 4.15 series.

Another way to possibly find the source of the problem, is to install and run the AlsaInfo script on both the 17.3 and 19 versions of Mint. This prints out a lot of audio related info that you could then use to compare the differences between the versions.

Unfortunately, I am not an expert at this stuff (linux included.) When I joined this forum after installing Mint, I saw some people with sound troubles that weren't getting fixed (which would have caused me to find another distro) and started searching for answers usually using ubuntu <issue here> as Mint is based on Ubuntu. The user Temüjin over at ubuntuforums.org seems like a real expert. I am considering joining that forum just so I can search his/her posts and gain more knowledge.

Whatever you do, the best of luck to you!

I got a crazy idea to search based on Your reference to: 92HD91BXX.

Sound_Remap_Audio_Ports
http://bit.ly/2PfJ5r6 - askubuntu

I achieved sound by:
remapping some HD audio ports that appear disconnected and then all the speakers work. There's a convenient little tool out there that does just that. I also got it working under Debian and it works without breaking headphones too.
Ignore Step 1 and start with Step 2, after installing

Code: Select all

alsa-tools-gui
from the package manager.

Code: Select all

HDAJackRetask
appears in the Menu.

Code: Select all

Step 1: Install hda-jack-retask from here: https://launchpad.net/~diwic/+archive/hda (ppa:diwic/hda)

Step 2: Open hda-jack-retask

Step 3: Select the IDT 92HD91BXX codec (may be different on other models)

Step 4: Check the "Show unconnected pins" box (the internal speakers do not show as connected)

Step 5: Remap 0x0d (Internal Speaker, Front side) to "Internal speaker"

Step 6: Remap 0x0f ("Not connected" but is the under-display speakers) to "Internal speaker"

Step 7: Remap 0x10 ("Not connected" but is the subwoofer) to "Internal speaker (LFE)"

Step 8: Apply now, then test with your favorite audio program (some may not work due to Pulse reset, so find one that does, verify sound is coming from all speakers).

Step 9: If it works, select "Install boot override" to save the settings to apply at boot time.

Step 10: Reboot. When it comes back, you should have full sound from all speakers. Also test headphones. Plugging in headphones should disable sound from all internal speakers.
From Ubuntu 13.10, hda-jack-retask is part of alsa-tools. Just install the alsa-tools-gui package from the regular archive and start "hdajackretask".
