realtek / xonar drivers for linux [SOLVED]
Hi,
I'm using sonya (18.2) and I have 2 sound cards installed on my computer, but none works, and I can't find drivers for linux on their sites, either. Can you please help me out?
The 2 sound cards are...
- realtek (comes with my GA-H97M-D3H motherboard);
- Xonar DG SI (standalone sound card installed separately and which has worked on Windows when I have first tested it some 4+ years ago when I have purchased this computer. I have uninstalled it a few years ago as I didn't need it, and while it's still enabled in BIOS / UEFI / whatever the hell that thing is called, it still wouldn't work on linux, which I'm assuming is because I don't have the drivers installed which, again, I don't know where to find)
Can somebody please reference me to some drivers for linux? Google only finds drivers for Windows

Linux isn't like Windwoes and generally doesn't need drivers except in certain circumstances. In a terminal, run
alsamixer
and press F6 to select your sound card. If that doesn't help, sudo apt install pavucontrol
and run it from a terminal also. Use it to select the correct output device.If none of that works, post the output of this terminal command:

None of those helped.
Alsamixer + f6 returned a menu that had these 4 options (exactly as I'm typing them below):

And the Pavucontrol thingy returned a sound control panel of some sort that seemed to be working (the indicator bar kept moving while the youtube clip I used for testing was running), but no sound came out. And under the "output devices" only one option showed: Digital Output (S/PDIF)
Last but not least, I have also checked my BIOS / UEFI thing and I noticed that there's no Xonar sound card appearing anywhere in there. Actually, I'm not even sure which section of the BIOS / UEFI to look it up under, because under Peripherals all slots are set to "enabled" and the card would get detected if it was connected to any of those ports, but only the HDD and the DVD/RW appear under Peripherals. As for the other tabs in the BIOS / UEFI... they don't make much sense with regarded to detecting a sound card, as they're all related to voltage control, booting options and whatnot).
So, these being said, here's the code you've asked for:

as the USB drivers. I simply plugged mine in and it worked. Have you tried changing the USB cable or the port it's plugged into? The only other clue I can offer is to see what happens when you disable the onboard sound in your machine's BIOS. I disable onboard sound because I don't use it. Addendum.
Your BIOS is dated 2014. Both the Rev 1.0 and Rev 1.1 versions of your motherboard have BIOS updates available. Perhaps that might help.

I have updated BIOS to version F3 (yes, that's how the version is called, F3) some 2 years ago, or so, and I've checked the BIOS updates last week when I tried to make the on-board sound card work (as I thought it was a BIOS issue), and I noticed on my motherboard's website page that the next 6 BIOS versions after F3 have nothing to do with sounds cards. They were only improving on the CPU chipsets or something like that, so I decided not to update the BIOS, especially since it's risky and I have no idea how I've managed to update it last time without ruining my PC
As for your other suggestions... I haven't tried any of those, although I do recall having pondered the idea of disabling the onboard sound card, but since that is the only one working in Windows, and since I'm mostly a Windows user (for now)... well, I didn't feel compelled to disable that card. I might do it, though, cause I've been trying to fix the sound under linux for years. Well, not each day continuously, but whenever I'd dual boot into Linux I'd notice the sound doesn't work and I'd spend time on forums and google trying to figure out what the issue is. I think I've done this 3-4 times already, and the results have always been the same, although many helpful people like you have offered their help.
So yeah, I think I might actually disable the onboard card, but first... can you please tell me why Nvidia shows up in my alsamixer control panel? Does my video card really have a sound card, and if yes, how do I use that? If that card works, I won't even bother with making the Xonar card work.

I'm pretty sure the Xonar is this one from your inxi report: Card-3 C-Media CMI8788 [Oxygen HD Audio] port: c000 bus-ID: 05:01.0 as Xonar actually uses/used a rebranded CMI8788 Oxygen HD audio processor. The port confuses me. Maybe Firewire?
The nvidia is going to be for HDMI if/when you choose to hook something up to it.
To get something working (actually it's already working based on your reply about pavucontrol, just either muted or playing to the wrong port) start a YouTube clip then in the terminal type

Go to the Configuration tab of pavucontrol (farthest on the right.) Change one of the options there to Analog Stereo Duplex. You might then needt to change where it's playing on the Output Devices tab.

DUDE! You're a wizard of the modern era. IT'S WORKING!!!!! For the first times in 4 years my Linux is freaking working! I've got SOUND!!!!!! If I were gay I would tell you that I love you )
Anyway, first of all, sorry for the late reply. My internet has been very bad (to put it mildly) over the last 2 days, and a few hours ago it reached the peak of its crappiness, so I literally couldn't post a reply because it would go down every few minutes, then go back on, and so on. Really annoying, but finally, here I am giving you the credit you deserve for being such a genius (and I'm not being sarcastic, you're literally the only guy to figure out why the hell my sound cards haven't been working under Linux for 4 years). Speaking of sound cards, here's the thing...
When I went to Configuration tab of Pavucontrol there are 2 options there: one called GK106 HDMI Audio Controller (whose profile was set as OFF, and it had tonne of options, all called either Digital Stereo, or Digital Surround), and the other option on the Configuration tab of Pavucontrol, which was below the GK106 one is called Built-in Audio and it has even more tonnes of options, of which the first 1 is indeed called Analog Stereo Duplex
Well, I picked that option as per your instructions and then went on the Output Devices tab of Pavucontrol and it gave me 2 options under the port tab: Line Out (unplugged) and Headphones (unplugged). So, both these options were unplugged and I freaked out because my video was running, the speakers were PLUGGED IN, and yet, both those options under the Port tab said UNPLUGGED and I couldn't hear a thing. I was so let down and didn't know what to do anymore that I just stood there for a good 20-30 seconds really staring blankly and not understanding why it just won't work.... Then it hit me! All this time I have been trying to make the Xonar sound card work, without even thinking about making the other one work (the one on the motherboard probably). Like I said, I was staring blankly and in despair then unconsciously my gaze moved on to the slots of the built-in card. I quickly unplugged the speakers jack, then went ahead and plugged into each and every one of those bloody little holes (while the video kept running, obviously), and on my 4th try out of 6 holes I finally heard something. For... I don't know... either a fraction of a second, or maybe a couple seconds (I really don't know how long it was) I literally froze (you know, like how you're freezing when you hear something that's not supposed to be heard and are trying to identify the sound and figure out if it's dangerous or safe)... So anyway, I froze for ... a certain number of moments, my fingers literally stiff on the jack, not wanting to let it go for fear of not being able to continue hearing those sounds LOL ... Eventually I let it go and jumped up in joy (like, literally I have jumped up and screamed IT WORKS!!!!, and I'm not a joyful person by nature. Last time I've been this happy I think it was 10-15 years ago, maybe more)
So, yeah... it's working man! It's really working for the first time in 4 damn years. I have SOUND under Linux, and it's all thanks to you! It's like a dream... I can't stop listening to youtube and a movie that's running from my HDD. I don't even care that I can't make up anything from this mess of sounds, I'm only happy that I can hear them
Before ending this lengthy message may I ask if you happen to know why the sound is so highly pitched for the files on my computer, but it sounds OK on youtube? All the videos that I'm watching on Youtube sound normally (with the right level of bass), but when I run a movie (ANY movie) from my HDD it sounds like there's no bass whatsoever in any of those movies. The media files from my computer are opening up with VLC and when I go to the VLC "about" file it says that the version is 2.2.2 Weatherwax, whatever that is...
If you can help me with this issue, as well, that would be cool. If not, absolutely no problem, as you've already done A LOT for me.

EDIT: after watching some more youtube + movies from my HDD I have noticed that youtube's sound, too, is high pitched, just not as much as in the files from my computer. I think I'll need an audio equalizer or something to make the sound the way I want, but... I'm busy switching from Mint 18.2 Cinnamon to Mint 19 Xfce, so I will probably worry about that in a few hours. If you do happen to know, though of a good audio equalizer, or any other solution to my issue do share it! I'm all ears I promise

I'm guessing (and this is a guess) the higher pitch is pulse playing the sound at 44100Hz when the source is actually 48000Hz. You could try editing /etc/pulse/daemon.conf
On 18.3 you'd use
In the same file, the sample format might need changing as well. s16le is default, s24le or s32le might be better for you.
Making these changes might mess up any 44100 files you listen to, so adding

One thing I'd like to ask, though is if 18.3 is a typo, or you really intended to type 18.3? Cause the version of my Mint is 18.2 ... Does it even matter anyway?? Eh, what the hell! Now, after using the code you gave me, there's a few things I'd like to address.
1) First of all, I'm not noticing any major change in the way the media files behave. I might sense a slightly improvement in the lowering of the pitch when I play movies from my HDD, but still nothing major that I can safely say that it's worked, even though I have tried both s24le and s32le settings. That's one thing...
2) Second thing: you've said that after I make changes to that file to go and type "pulseaudio -k" into the terminal, which I did, BUT... I have no idea how long to wait after pressing ENTER because nothing really happens. I just stare at the terminal cursor flickering without getting any error / success message of any kind. So, do you happen to know how long I should wait after I type that command into the terminal before I can test the sound again? Do I wait seconds? Minutes? How long exactly? And do I restart the computer after each modification to that file, or can I simply re-open a movie file and see how it sounds?
3) Third thing... I have added that resample line code to the file, but I didn't know where exactly to add it and I've added it at the very end of the file. I left an empty row after the last line of the code in that file, then added the line you gave me using the same pattern the other code lines were following (ie. start the row with a semicolon, then leave an empty space, and then insert the code you gave me). After that, I have saved the file, went to terminal and typed "pulseaudio -k" in, and then waited for a few second (10 or so), before listening to a movie file again to see if any improvements have been made. And like I've said at point #1 nothing noticeable so far;
4) Then, the audio equalizer you gave me the link for... I downloaded it, installed it (it required 15 extra files in order to install, which I let it download as I didn't know what to do anyway :p), but after it installed it said that I already had that program installed. Well, no problem here. I just thought about letting you know, just because the more info I provide the better people can help ... What I'd like to know, however, is how to access that equalizer. I really have no idea how to access / run it. Do you happen to know?
5) Rhthmbox... that's probably the biggest issue with the sound because of all 3 media players that I'm testing my sound with (Youtube, VLC, and Rhythmbox) Rhythmbox is the worst. The sound in that program is atrocious, with lots of wooshes like I'm listening to some mono speakers. And my stereo speakers are good enough to output quality sounds as I'm using them daily with Windows, so I know what they're capable of outputting ... So, of the 3 media testers I'm using Rhthmbox is really the worst, not because the mp3 files played by this program don't have any bass AT ALL, but the speakers actually swish horribly. Youtube and VLC don't have this issue, so I'm assuming is Rythmbox only, which I will probably change to another player and see if there's any difference. I still wanted to let you know, though...
6) Last but not least, after I have edited and saved that file that I modified and AFTER I have closed it (well, saved first, and then closed) I have noticed some lines of code appearing in the terminal, and I'm not sure what to make of these lines since I'm clueless about programming / coding. I'll post them below so you can take a look at them and possibly get an idea about what could be wrong with my sound. Before I post the code however (3 lines of code for each instance) I just need to mention that the first code has appeared in the terminal AFTER I have replaced s16le with s24le in the file, then saved and closed the file, while the second code has appeared AFTER I have replaced s24le with s32le in that file, then saved and closed the file. So, here's the code:

1. That's not something I've played with myself, so I can't offer much more.
2. 10 seconds is plenty usually. It's just killing the pulseaudio daemon, which then automatically respawns.
3. End of the file was probably fine.

5. I've not played with Rhythmbox myself and am useless on advising options with most any media player. SMPlayer is highly recommended though, and it can bypass pulseaudio and use alsa directly (by changing a setting somewhere in its options.
6. Perfectly harmless warnings. We all get those after using gksudo xed.
