Re: No sound in new Tara

Post by MrEen »

Hi Antbat.

Let's start with the easiest potential fix. Delete the files in ~/.config/pulse/ then issue pulseaudio -k in the terminal then wait 10 seconds and test sound again.

EDIT: Also, in that other thread, a complete shut down of the computer fixed the problem.

This time the Volume Control Configuration tab shows both cards. The GP104 is set to Digital Stereo (HDMI 2) Output, and the Built-in Audio is set to Analog Stereo Duplex. The Input Devices shows the Built-in Audio locked and green checkmarked. Under "Port" it shows "Front Microphone (unplugged). The volume is set to 100% and the flickering bar, flickers rapidly less than 1/4 inch along its length of 3 inches. The Output Devices tab shows "GP104 High Defin..." locked and green checked. The Port says "HDMI /DisplayPort 2 (plugged in). The volume bar below this is 100%, and the second volume bar flickers about a half inche of its 3 inches. Then "Built-in Audio Analog Stereo" is shown locked and green checked, and its Port is Headphones (plugged in) set to 100%, and the second bar does NOT flicker. "Recording" has no output. The Playback tab shows "System Sounds" in Silence. Then VLC media player (LibVLC 3.0.3) in this tab has the first volume bar to 95% of maximum and the second volume bar flickers rapidly about 40%.

Let's make sure there isn't any confusion here.

In your first post, when you ran pacmd list-sinks it was playing to headphones that were presumably plugged into the headphone jack on the computer.

In your second post, it's still playing to the headphones, but it now shows you have a hooked up HDMI device (monitor?)

What is your current setup and how exactly would you like to be hearing sound?

I'd like to make sure we're on the same page before offering anything more.

Yes, well, I had disabled the Nvidia card sound because I like the onboard sound more. Then I reset the Pulse Audio. I prefer using the headphones. Thanks.

Okay. Something weird is happening based on your description. You were getting flickering under the HDMI which was supposedly suspended for inactivity. And no flickering for the headphones where it was supposedly playing to.

Based on this, I want you to go to the Configuration tab of pavucontrol and set the HDMI section to Off then test.

Re: No sound in new Tara

MrEen, you asked me to delete the files in ~/.config/pulse and issue pulseaudio -k in the terminal, after I made the first post. Didn't this reset pulseaudio to defaults then that made the HDMI that I had set OFF appear and start flickering? Also the default port in Output Devices Built-in Audio is line out so I think I made at least one mistake saying it was set to Headphones. I don't remember resetting it then but I've reset it now and I've reset the GP104 (HDMI) in pavucontrol Configuration) to OFF. Here are the ouputs again.

In this most recent post, your headphones are available, but Line out is selected from the Output Devices tab.

Line out was selected by default when I first ran pavucontrol but I changed it to Headphones. Why do you say this?

From this in your paste

Code: Select all

ports:
analog-output-lineout: Line Out (priority 9900, latency offset 0 usec, available: no)
			properties:

analog-output-headphones: Headphones (priority 9000, latency offset 0 usec, available: yes)

				device.icon_name = "audio-headphones"
	active port: <analog-output-lineout>

Active port is at the bottom.

Thy these one line at a time:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa-base pulseaudio
sudo apt-get install alsa-base pulseaudio
sudo alsa force-reload
Maybe that'll get it working correctly.

it's 2018: we have self driving cars , wireless chargers and we've sent robots to land mars but yet linux still struggles with the simple task of making sound come out. could you maybe go into bios and disable some of the hardware that can be disabled so you don't confuse that linux more than it already is?

@Shruiken91 you need to open your own thread so users don't confuse the 2 issues

Re: No sound in new Tara

Post by ADee »

I was the person referred to in this post with the no sound problem. In my quest to learn I removed my HDD and installed another HDD and did another fresh install, and had no sound again. Rebooting didn't help. My fix was to power the PC off wait a few seconds and turn it on again. That was all it took, and it was suggested in the thread I started about it.

I had the perfect excuse, as it turns out I had a WD Black 1.5 TB HDD a forgot about, which was a better HDD than the one I was using. So I learned and put a better HDD in this PC.
