webcam not recognised

I cannot get Linux to recognise my webcam. I have Linux 18 Cinnammon, 4.4.0-53 kernel,Intel CPU B970 @230 x 2 and 8 gig ram. It is a Zoostorm laptop and I have tried Skype, Cheese and gucview and none of them pick up my camera. If I run the command dmesg | less I get this output:

Well, It certainly does not show up on the USB bus.

Incidently, The output of 'dmeg' is your boot up information. Thats where it is going thru and discovering all your devices and setting up memory and other fun stuff. Not too helpful in a case like this unless you run this command:

dmesg |grep usb
which tells it to filter out every line except those that mention 'usb'.

The only options I can think of is to go into the bios and make sure the camera is turned on if there is a setting for that. Otherwise see if a keyboard combination turns the camera on/off.

Its probably an unsupported device and you might have to just buy one that plugs into one of your usb ports.

Perhaps you can post the exact model number and research a bit on what camera is used in it. At least post the exact model number in your next post and perhaps some googling around can provide the type of cam in it.

I have stumbled on your post while looking for something else.

In the output of your dmesg command I see CLEVO. My custom built laptop has Clevo components in it and there is a webcam toggle on the F10 key which is operated by pressing the Function Key (Fn) plus F10.

If the camera is toggled off, Cheese etc. display "No device found".

It may not be F10 on your machine; if not, it is worth trying all the F keys.
