ASUS X55L no sound after update
I have been using LInux for 5 years now, but still consider myself a noob. After updating my ASUS from Linux Mint 17 I lost all sound. There was a moment after the update that the sound started working again, but this quickly stopped and never again worked. As a side note, I also updated my girlfriend's Dell Laptop and lost sound on it as well. On the ASUS it shows Dummy Output as the only option. I have followed all threads on SALSA issues, but none have worked. I had accepted that I will not have sound for quite some months now, but hope that I can find a fix for this as I love my Linux laptop and would like to restore it to its old glory. Pictures of the sound settings are attached. I will also add that these change from time to time (I have never before seen it display that the built-in sound was disabled until today when I went to take pics for the post)

In that screenshot with the Disabled Off bit, have you tried clicking on the box below to change the Pfofile?
I am more familiar with PulseAudio Volume Control where that same setting would be on the Configuration tab. It may help if you give that a shot.
To try to help get this working, it would help to see the output of

Thanks for taking this on MrEen! I have tried clicking the box in the sound settings where theoretically I should be able to switch from Dummy Sound to the actual sound card on my computer, but this is unfortunately not a listed option (the only option is Dummy Output). I have also tried the fixes listed in the forums about switching between pulseaudio and salsa to no avail.

The box I wanted you to click on is on the Hardware tab and says "Off" with the word Profile in front of it, but I'm suspecting it may not help. Please do check there though as I'm hoping you might have another option(s) in there that turns your card back on (something like Analog Stereo Duplex or Analog Stereo Output + Analog Stereo Input.)
As I said, I'm more familiar with PulseAudio Volume Control. I do recommend installing it as it does offer more sound options than the default sound app. The simple act of installing and running it may actually cure your issue.
It is also very slightly possible that you somehow changed a setting in your BIOS that turned off the sound when you were installing Mint 19 MATE so that's also worth checking.

One other thing is you're still using the default kernel. It's marginally possible upgrading the kernel will fix this.
