Solved! Speakers ONLY work when headphones plugged in

Post by ckdk »

Hi, folks,
I've got an Asus Vivobook 15 (model #: TP510UQ). I just put the latest edition of Mint on it, and everything except the sound works. At first I thought I didn't have ANY sound except with headphones and have spent a couple days researching various fixes with no luck.

I had resigned myself to only having headphone audio, but I just discovered that the speakers actually do work... but ONLY when I have the headphones plugged in. I have auto-mute enabled in alsamixer (which does not work, clearly, since the speakers are outputting sound anyway).

The sound card is just onboard audio.

Code: Select all

$ aplay -l
reveals:

Code: Select all

and

Code: Select all

$ lspci -v | grep -i audio
gives me:

Code: Select all

00:1f.3 Audio device: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-LP HD Audio (rev 21)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Sunrise Point-LP HD Audio
Any thoughts on what to try next? I've tried most of the suggestions I've found various places - messing with alsamixer, messing with pavucontrol, trying different models and fixes in alsa-base.conf, downloading the latest dkms packages... No joy.

Ideas would be muh appreciated!
Thanks!

Hi ckdk, and welcome to the forum.

That aplay result looks a little weird to me with "Generic Analog" and may be a clue to your issue. I think the best path might be to follow the steps here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/AlsaInfo and paste the results or URL back here.

If you paste the output, please enclose the results in-between [ⅽode] and [/ⅽode] code markers by selecting </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply.

Just to my untrained eye, the thing that looks fishy is that ACPI warning, which I think has something to do with power saving. But of course I'm not an expert, so maybe you can tell me.
Thanks again!

Re: Speakers ONLY work when headphones plugged in

Post by MrEen »

On first glance (I'll continue searching) I noticed you've added two options to alsa-base.conf:

Code: Select all

snd_hda_intel: model=laptop
snd_hda_intel: position_fix=1 enable=yes
As you still don't have this solved, I'd suggest deleting the second line, and see if changing the other line to the following makes any difference:

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel model=asus
I'll let you know if I find anything else amiss with those results and please also add inxi-Fxz results to your next reply.

I've tried using

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel model=asus
before, but just for SnGs I tried it again, and the status remains the same.

Here is the result of

Code: Select all

$ inxi -Fxz
:

Code: Select all

Re: Speakers ONLY work when headphones plugged in

Post by MrEen »

After going through the info rather thoroughly I'm a little perplexed at the conflict represented by these two sections:

Code: Select all

Simple mixer control 'Headphone',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pswitch
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Playback 0 - 74
  Mono:
  Front Left: Playback 0 [0%] [-74.00dB] [off]
  Front Right: Playback 0 [0%] [-74.00dB] [off]
Simple mixer control 'Speaker',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pswitch
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Playback 0 - 74
  Mono:
  Front Left: Playback 74 [100%] [0.00dB] [on]
  Front Right: Playback 74 [100%] [0.00dB] [on]

Code: Select all

[ 5.559551] snd_hda_codec_generic hdaudioC0D0: autoconfig for Generic: line_outs=1 (0x1d/0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0) type:speaker
[ 5.559553] snd_hda_codec_generic hdaudioC0D0: speaker_outs=0 (0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0)
[ 5.559555] snd_hda_codec_generic hdaudioC0D0: hp_outs=1 (0x16/0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0)
[ 5.559556] snd_hda_codec_generic hdaudioC0D0: mono: mono_out=0x0
[ 5.559557] snd_hda_codec_generic hdaudioC0D0: inputs:
[ 5.559558] snd_hda_codec_generic hdaudioC0D0: Internal Mic=0x1a
[ 5.559560] snd_hda_codec_generic hdaudioC0D0: Mic=0x19
The first says speakers are on, while the second essentially says there are no speakers, unless I'm misreading that.

To make sure it doesn't get in the way, delete that last line in alsa-base.conf now as it didn't help.

I have two suggestions that may prove worthwhile. First, your inxi report leads me to believe you may still have Windows on your laptop. If so, boot into Windows then do a complete shutdown then wait 10 seconds before powering up and booting into Mint. If no success that way, install alsa-tools-gui then in the terminal run hdajackretask and make sure Generic shows in the box in the upper left corner and see if Speaker exists and if so, try checking the Override box then click Apply now and test your speakers. If that works, click Install boot override. If it doesn't work, you may be able to fiddle with it but I don't have the experience to help in that regard. After each fiddle, be sure to click Apply now and test the sound., but do not click on Install boot override unless you have fixed the problem.

If still no success there are still other things we can try.

Don't know if this will help, but here's someone who used hdajackretask successfully: viewtopic.php?f=48&t=276433&p=1519491&h ... k#p1519491

OK, somehow it now works! I was using the hdajackretask utility, and I was able to get the speakers working, although I couldn't get them to turn off when headphones were plugged in. So after messing around with the different pins for a while, I realized that I hadn't removed that last line in alsa-base.conf. So I removed that line, rebooted, and suddenly speakers and headphones are working as intended. I did also go back in Win10 and do a complete shutdown before, so I suppose that could have been the culprit too.

I'm not exactly sure what did it, but thank you so much for all your help, MrEen!
