Mint 19 Tara - No HDMI Sound Output

Post by 2kreate »

After a round of updates my sound output to HDMI through my Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050 Ti card is failing.

Thing I have tried: ALSAmixer, pavucontrol, editing .asoundrc, various ALSA settings/hacks, various installations/upgrades/reinstalls, and a few other command line tutorials, which unfortunately I did not document as I went. As far as I know I reverted everything back after I had attempted a change.

In ALSAMixer, my Intel internal audio is available, but the Nvidia device seems to be disabled or suspended:

I saw this in pacmd, but can't seem to change the values to no:

Code: Select all

pacmd dump | grep suspend
load-module module-suspend-on-idle
suspend-sink alsa_output.pci-0000_01_00.1.hdmi-stereo yes
suspend-sink alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1f.3.analog-stereo yes
suspend-source alsa_output.pci-0000_01_00.1.hdmi-stereo.monitor yes
suspend-source alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1f.3.analog-stereo.monitor yes

Code: Select all

Could someone please help me to revive my HDMI sound output?

Hi again 2kreate.

I don't see a reboot on that list. That kinda fixed you last time.

If it doesn't work this time, please start a song or video then run pacmd list-sinks in the terminal and paste the results here. I find it strange the pactl command you tried only gave the monitors of both sound devices and not the devices themselves. Hopefully we'll get better results this way.

Good luck.

EDITED: Brain fart. Sources is for input, not output.

Sorry, MrEen, I should have put that on the list. I guess I assumed that it's the first thing everyone checks is to reboot.

(Just to clarify, the last time I had this problem it wouldn't work on reboot until after I updated the Linux kernel).

Here is the output you requested:

Re: Mint 19 Tara - No HDMI Sound Output

Post by MrEen »

There's nothing at all wrong with that output that I can see. Make sure obviously that the display's sound isn't muted.

Deleting the files in your ~/.config/pulse directory then running pulseaudio -k in the terminal should fix whatever isn't right. You'll probably need to restart your browser after that.

Hope that helps.
