Sound on one speaker....

On this computer:
I brought the system down, unplugged my hard drives, put a Mint 17.3 live in the DVD and booted up. Both the left and right speakers worked. I then switched back to the speakers that were first connected and they two worked. The test showed that they were in balance.
I brought the system down, removing the live disk, reconnected my hard drives, and booted up the system. The speakers are working well and in balance.
Question: any thoughts about what happened and why it "fixed itself"?
The sound stopped on the right hand speaker. I switched out the speakers for another pair I knew worked. They only had sound on the right hand speaker and the left hand speaker wasn't working.System: Host: AHC-TOWER Kernel: 4.4.0-138-generic x86_64 (64 bit gcc: 5.4.0)
