On this computer:
System: Host: AHC-TOWER Kernel: 4.4.0-138-generic x86_64 (64 bit gcc: 5.4.0)
Desktop: Cinnamon 3.0.7 (Gtk 3.18.9-1ubuntu3.3) Distro: Linux Mint 18 Sarah
Machine: System: Hewlett-Packard product: HP Compaq 8200 Elite CMT PC
Mobo: Hewlett-Packard model: 1494 Bios: Hewlett-Packard v: J01 v02.24 date: 09/20/2013
CPU: Quad core Intel Core i5-2400 (-MCP-) cache: 6144 KB
flags: (lm nx sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 sse4_2 ssse3 vmx) bmips: 24743
clock speeds: max: 3400 MHz 1: 2263 MHz 2: 1664 MHz 3: 2354 MHz 4: 1744 MHz
Audio: Card Intel 6 Series/C200 Series Family High Definition Audio Controller
driver: snd_hda_intel bus-ID: 00:1b.0
Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture v: k4.4.0-138-generic
Drives: HDD Total Size: 2000.4GB (58.9% used) ID-1: /dev/sda model: WDC_WD1003FZEX size: 1000.2GB
ID-2: /dev/sdb model: WDC_WD1003FZEX size: 1000.2GB
The sound stopped on the right hand speaker. I switched out the speakers for another pair I knew worked. They only had sound on the right hand speaker and the left hand speaker wasn't working.

I brought the system down, unplugged my hard drives, put a Mint 17.3 live in the DVD and booted up. Both the left and right speakers worked. I then switched back to the speakers that were first connected and they two worked. The test showed that they were in balance.

I brought the system down, removing the live disk, reconnected my hard drives, and booted up the system. The speakers are working well and in balance.

Question: any thoughts about what happened and why it "fixed itself"?

There's really a myriad of possibilities, but my first guess would be something just a teensie bit loose inside the computer that was "fixed" when you were messing with the drives.

Another strong candidate would be pulseaudio/alsa messed up, and just the reboot fixed it.

Then there's always the Gremlins!!
