No sound on netbook (Mint 19)

Post by LM001 »

I'm new to the forum, and have searched and tried several solutions, but still cannot get the sound to work on my netbook after installing Mint.

Hi LM001, and welcome to the forum.

EDIT: I think you need to fix some other stuff first. Your root partition is 96% full that I am guessing is from error logs because of the network card and maybe other things:
Network: Card: Failed to Detect Network Card!
Partition: ID-1: / size: 29G used: 26G (96%) fs: ext4 dev: /dev/mmcblk0p2
I'm not an expert at fixing those things I'm afraid. I'll see what I can find. Also, are there any huge files of yours you can move to another drive.
And one other thing. Did you run Timeshift? That might be the cause of the almost full drive if it wasn't setup/run properly.

If you end up not being able to boot up before this issue is fixed, you can run the USB/DVD you used to install Mint to be able to get back here for help.

Leave this section alone until other issues are settled:
I think you're going to need to follow the steps in this post

If you plan to use HDMI you'll want to skip the last step, and I know blacklisting the lpe didn't used to be necessary.

If you need any further assistance, just ask.

Good luck.

Maybe the first thing to check is if you have a whole bunch of kernels installed.

Open a terminal window and run ls /boot and paste the result back here.

Also, see this post by gm10.

And this might give a little bit more room on the drive: sudo apt-get autoclean && sudo apt-get clean

The last I'll suggest for now is use the File Manager to navigate to File System folder /var and right click on the log folder and go to Properties. How much space does it say it is taking up?

Thanks for your response!

So I've deleted all the Timeshift data and then uninstalled it.

The result of ls /boot:

Code: Select all

natasha@natasha-Z140C:~$ ls /boot
abi-4.15.0-20-generic memtest86+.elf
abi-4.15.0-36-generic memtest86+_multiboot.bin

memtest86+.bin
natasha@natasha-Z140C:~$
Executed sudo apt-get autoclean && sudo apt-get clean

var is taking up 1.4 GB

Something that is taking up a lot of space on File System is a swapfile of 1.4 GB.

Regarding the sound issue: I followed the instructions on the post you recommended, and I now have a sound icon on my system tray, and I am able to open Pulseaudio, but there is still no sound output.

Okay. Hopefully it's just a mute issue now. Play something with sound and while it is silently playing run pacmd list-sinks in the terminal. Copy the output and paste it back here.

Also, the output of aplay -l might help.

When pasting large blocks of text, please enclose the results in-between [ⅽode] and [/ⅽode] code markers by selecting </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply.

Ok. Nice work so far. The output tells me you had your headphones plugged in. Assuming that you did, we're hopefully getting closer.

I think the best course of action at this point is to install and run PulseAudio Volume Control and navigate to the Configuration tab and try changing the Profile. With any luck, that'll kick the sound into gear. I am guessing that you'll change a Profile to Deep-Buffer Audio.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks again for all your assistance thus far! I would never have got this far on my own!

I didn't have my headphones plugged in at the time.

In PulseAudio Volume Control, I changed to each of the profiles available, but the sound didn't want to kick in.
Also, there is no option for "Deep-Buffer Audio", only: analog mono input, stereo output, multichannel output.

One thing though: on startup, there is a "click" sound coming from the speakers, but no login tune yet.

All right. There are two things we should try here.

First, in your File Manager click on View and make sure Show Hidden Files is checked, then navigate to /home/natasha/.config/pulse and delete all the files in there, then in the terminal run pulseaudio -k wait a few seconds then test your sound. If the /pulse folder is still empty, you may need to run pulseaudio --start in the terminal. If you are testing using your browser, also restart the browser after killing pulseaudio and before testing the sound.

Next, start a video on youtube or something or play a longish song then go to the Playback tab on PulseAudio Volume Control (pavucontrol) Do you see a visual indication that sound is playing below a volume slider? If no, go back to the Configuration tab and change the Profile to something else. Once you do see the bar below the volume slider jumping around on the Playback tab, click on the box in front of the little speaker icon and it should give you other output options. Keep changing them until you can finally hear something.

I'm really hoping this is going to get it working.

I'll add one more thing. On the Output Devices tab of pavucontrol, you may need to change the Port. It may right now say Headphones (plugged in) that you may need to change to something else even if that something says (unplugged) or (unavailable) I'd be interested to know if actually plugging in headphones changes anything on the Port, but it's not that important.

Good luck!

I've deleted all the files in

, still no sound output afterwards.

Then, played a YouTube video, and PulseAudio does indicate that sound is playing. However, under each profile selected, there is no actual output.

On output devices, my ports are headphones and speakers, and I tested both of those with my headphones plugged in and out.

I can't believe I haven't suggested this earlier, but unmute everything in alsamixer. Your pacmd results said it was not muted, but it said it was playing to headphones that weren't plugged in, so there could be something in there that is muted. Also, if there is a column named Auto-mute, arrow to it and use up or down arrows to make it disabled.

So alsamixer made something happen!

I unmuted everything in alsamixer, which resulted in an output, but unfortunately it is a constant white noise and weird noises over either the speakers or the headphones.
The first time I opened PulseAudio there was a considerable screeching. I rebooted, but still the same.

Damn. We seem to be getting closer, but we're getting farther away from ideas I can think of to get this fixed.

Back in alsamixer, drop anything that says boost back down to a low level and see if that helps any. If not, either list all the columns or get a screenshot of the window. If you go with a screenshot, you'll have to upload it to a site like imgur.com, then paste the URL that goes directly to the image in between rimg tags like this:

Code: Select all

[rimg]https://i.imgur.com/T08dQmv.gif[/rimg]
Hope I got that correct.
Ahh, there's also an img code in the bar above the reply box.
